Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

I do not know exactly how the ping list works, but would like to be informed about self-survival skills etc. Can you add me to the list?

Study: DoD May Act On US Civil Unrest

December 29, 2008

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

A U.S. Army War College report warns an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest and the need to call on the military to restore order.

snipped..

The report also suggests the new (Barack Obama) administration could face a “strategic shock” within the first eight months in office.

Soldiers under the former Joint Task Force-6 (now JTF-North) supported the Border Patrol in El Paso with its drug-interdiction operations.

In case civilian authorities request help or become overwhelmed, El Paso has several National Guard and military reserve units that can be called on. In 1992, National Guard and active Marine and Army units were deployed to help police control riots and looting in Los Angeles.

“The military was not called out during the Great Depression, and I don’t think our economic problems are as bad as they were then,” he said. “The military always has contingency plans. It’s a think tank’s job to come up with scenarios, but that doesn’t mean it represents an active interest on the part of the (Pentagon).”

Now, what I want is some acreage backing one of those parks!

But, I think I'd still miss having winters with non-deciduous trees around. It must get pretty barren in the areas without pines.

Killing and processing chickens, canning the broth, that's a LOT of work!

I have a question for the 2 of you: if you have chickens around and they are healthy, why do you process them and can them vs. keeping them around to have fresh chicken when you want it? (I remember DW saying the texture of the canned meat could be a little different, so if we're not in extreme survival mode and nobody's trying to steal chickens, why can them?

Whew!

Haven't posted in for a couple of weeks... been hard at it getting this gulch up and running! The snow is mostly gone, and have had some truly righteous Sunshiny days this week... the soil is finally getting soft enough to work (YAY!). Speaking of Righteous... Happy (belated) Easter!

Am waiting for the tractor to hydraulic press down the garden area, still clearing trees and brush (Oh my aching back)! There is so much work to do that I haven't been tracking FR much, let alone this thread...

Have unboxed the grinder DelaWhere, but need to roll into town to pick up some peanuts and stuff to try out in it, so no report on that yet... Mrs. Outrider is keeping me on a short leash so I'm spending a lot of time upgrading the living quarters! Plenty of small jobs, and I'm loving every minute of it... still trying to figure out how some of the equipment works (i.e. the hard water softener has me baffled and there are no instructions on how it works!).

Well, it's back to bed for this cowboy, BIG day ahead! Hope all is going well for all of you!

If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Blue Ridge Mts, be sure to traverse the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is just breath-takingly beautiful. About 80 miles in length, I have visited it many, many times and never get enough of its beauty, especially in the spring when Dogwoods and Rhododendrons are in full bloom all along the road. The family is well aware that if our travels take us any where near this Parkway, enough time in our schedule must be made to visit.

Another spot you would just love is the Gasby Penninsula way north in Eastern Canada. A combination of mountains and little fishing villages in the Vally's along the coast, leave you alternately driving in the mountains looking down on the little coastal villages and then down in the villages driving along the beautiful coastline, looking up at the mountains. It's a long, long drive, even from here in Maine, but one of the few places yet unspoiled by the modern world. Some of the villages are nearly all French speaking and some are nearly all English speaking, providing delighful contrasts within just a few miles.

Yes, the cold winters do get to me , especially as I get older, but occasionally, I still manage to snowshoe out into the woods where the white pristine snow, the quiet broken only by the song of chickadees refreshes my soul and makes me realize that despite the cold, I would miss the changing seasons if I lived elsewhere.

>>>Is your goat still alive after that?<<<

LOL - she survived that... but died of old age about 18 months after that...

We just added the strawberries to the long list of other things she devoured. Like the three 4’ Crape Myrtles I got for my wife for her birthday which she stripped and then proceeded to gnaw the bark off of the day after they were planted.

Good thing that goats have great personalities though, or she would have become chevron in the freezer.

Tough old roosters aren’t as good as ‘prime’ ones. Also old roosters tend to have much more fat.

Takes a while to get scalding water hot, gather the other tools, get blood spatters on you, pick them, gut them, cut them up, then have to clean everything up - including yourself - just to have one for Sunday dinner. Better to do those things once and eat them at your leisure.

Texture change is like long simmered chicken - like canned from the store but much much better.

Remember, I don’t stockpile for some disastrous event - we eat from our stockpile every day and set back some for those rainy years.

I can have a pot of chicken noodle soup ready in 20 minutes. Jar of chicken, peas, carrots, broth and some of my homemade egg noodles... About the same with chicken pot pie, or chicken a la king, etc. etc.. Very convenient.

It takes no energy to store it.

I get no freezer burn.

People DO steal chickens! Not something new. One of the problems around here with the commercial growers is the theft of chickens from their houses.

Does that bring back a memory where the neighbor came by to fast on the road and hit a chicken. You knew what was for supper that night.

I keep telling hubby that we will have stiff regulations about turning compost if he doesn't stop turning ours at about 6P.M. on Saturdays when the elites across the river are just firing up their barbeque's for a party. The aroma adds nothing to their enjoyment.

Maybe we should can some ‘compost air’ and make it mandatory smelling for would-be migrants to rural areas. Move here and expect this... Mmmmmm not offensive to me at all... OK, you are welcome here. Otherwise, stay in that smelly city.

Well, fellow Right Wing Extremists...

Seems we are all branded by Homeland Security!

“Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and
adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups),
and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or
rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a
single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”

‘rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority’

Have these ‘wingnuts’ ever heard of - let alone read - the Constitution???????

Suggest you see what else they think -

Granny, I know you don’t like pdf files, but it is worth taking the few minutes for it to load on dial-up.

Oh, and while it is unclassified, it is for official use only.... Not intended for release to the general public.

These people need to learn who their bosses really are!

Arrrrrrgh!!!!!

I want to know where the one is that is titled:

‘Left Wing Radical Threats To Society’

Extortion - Rabble Rousing - Mobs - Riots - Civil Disobedience - Control Freaks - Mass Demonstrations - Election Tampering - Tax Cheating - Privileged Class Individuals and Groups - Illegal Immigrant Encouraging, etc., etc......

To my thinking, these are a much greater threat than cutting the barrel too short on a shotgun in a baiting sting operation - like Ruby Ridge and similar episodes...

Double Arrrrgh!!!!!

Well, guess I am now officially on their ‘list’. So be it!

New Hampshire motto, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, Yep - even George Patton come to mind along with many other Patriots!
