Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? Its an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training
Ive been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe thats why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood
I wonder how much information on Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn might crop up?
Granny, I did blast him in my comments. It is somewhat reassuring to read some of the others comments...
Another Jane Fonda !!!!!
SHOULD BE OUSTED FROM CONGRESS—MEDAL FOR SERVICE?? GET RID OF THE SEC. OF THE NAVY AS WELL!!!!
Should be removed from Government service, as a crooked, corrupt self serving hypercrite, No incumbent should be elected to office that are presently serving in government today. Impeachment of the following alsoFRANKS,DOBBS,PELOSI, REID and others.
This is an embarrassment!
Not that you should print
Take your head out of the sand! This award to Murtha besmirtches all other justifiable recipients!
Murtha is a disgrace to any military vet and family. He is a digrace as a congressman. He is a miserable human being.
He is a disgrace to my country.
With relatives and friends who have served this country faithfully, it is shocking to see any sort of award given to Rep. Murtha, who has done nothing except castigate the various armed forces. Please reverse this plan to honor him immediately!!!
This nothing short of criminal, this man is a traitor to our country
Burn in Hell Murtha
How can one man be so arrogant and the other so stupid??
This is NOT MY NAVY
This is an outrage
Appalling
murtha is a piece of crap the worst
Murtha deserves indictment, not awards.
god help the u.s.a.
Giving this award to Murtha will dishonor the medal forever.
Did the Secretary of the Navy pay his taxes?
I am a registered voter, Wife of Vietnam Veteran, Mother of an Afghanistan Veteran (still active in the National Guard), Mother of Navy Veteran, Grandmother of a Marine on active duty in Okinawa, and my Son In Law serves in the Navy . John Murtha does not deserve to be honored and I have earned the right to say so thanks to my boys who all volunteered to serve our country with dignity and pride!
Murtha is a disgrace to our military and an embarrassment to the United States
Apalled is too nice a word!
This man is a traitor and a disgrace to our nation. How could you possibly honor him?
This is an outrage and a slap in the face for all military personal.
“Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale, and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.” -A. Lincoln
The Secretary of the Navy should resign his commision. His ignorance and lack of moral reasoning is mind boggling.
You too can sign this petition at:

p.s. 12,013 petitioners already!
>>>Let me guess - dad had her eat something healthier! <<<
Well of course, 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, 2 homemade whole grain pocket rolls, 1 orange, hot cocoa...
THEN we each had 3 pieces of that fudge...
Now you know why she tells everyone she is a ‘Daddy’s Girl’.
You were on my mind as I was in our local Gigante store...
Well, they do carry the Diamond ‘Strike Anywhere’ Matches...
They are 3 boxes of 250 for $2.59.
If you can’t get any, let me know and I would gladly get some and send them to you.
Yep, I stocked up too.
The Murtha petition already has 10,526 signatures.<<<
There are a lot of folks that do not support murtha.
I have a couple sets of reports on him, many articles about his crimes and involvements, that a lady put together a couple years ago.....scary as it gets.
This will help eliminate some of the flapping from a loose cover which increases the wear and decreases the longevity.<<<
Excellent advice.
No, I don’t buy that one. I’m really glad I ‘paniced’ and sold everything when the DOW was between $12K and $10K. Socialist governments don’t encourage economic growth. It won’t be bouncing back any time soon.<<<
Sorry, I do not believe in stocks and never bought one.
Might as well go and play a casino game, pull the handle and it is win or loose.
Buying real estate, now that is the way to go, rentals if you can maintain them, or vacant land to resell.
I wonder how much information on Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn might crop up?<<<
I haven’t had a chance to go and read them as yet, want to do so.
I don’t know, I think these are some Bush released and am not at all sure if obama has checked on them.
And then there are the clintons and kerry.....
Does anyone have any advice on how to build a greenhouse that will withstand snow on the roof and will also allow the snow to slide off? (We have building codes of 200 lbs/sq. ft.). But the snow needs to get off to let the light in. I’m not sure what kind of material would work.<<<<
I do not have knowledge of real snow, but if you check the solar greenhouse books, some will show the angles to build and they are often steep enough slopes to slide it off, due to the slope.
I like mine attached to the house, and you will get heat from it, if you open a window or door.
How about half an “A” frame, that will slide it off, there are some new coverings that I do not know about, but the old clear corrugated fiberglass works well too, it is what I used.
Never use the brown or red tinted fiberglass, as it cuts the ultra violet rays from the sun, that the plants need.
Granny, I did blast him in my comments. It is somewhat reassuring to read some of the others comments...<<<
LOL, I was beginning to think you got a little carried away, then went back and caught the “others comments”.
Excellent advice...
They make a polycarbonate sheet that is two layers with spacers that create air pockets. Considerably reduces heat loss and is much stronger.
If you make a freestanding gothic arch greenhouse, it will shed snow quite well, and most building codes consider a pipe frame, polyethylene covered greenhouse to be a 'temporary structure' and permitting is usually not required nor is code applicable... But in those Demo-Can't controlled places, the Liberal 'Rats control everything...
Hey, maybe that is why I am a Republ-I-Can.
Seriously, I would put one on the South side of the house, shed, barn, hillside. On the house, Granny is absolutely correct - adds heat to the house in the sunny winter day. Open top AND bottom of a window, and the heat will come into the house through the top and cooler air will go into greenhouse via the bottom.
Something like this:
Good advice on green houses - thanks granny!
You can even go to the 'Cadillac' with Lexan which is almost indestructible. (thicker sheets of it are bullet-proof)
The trapped air serves as an insulation and increases the R factor considerably. (R is a measure of resistance to the transfer of heat - Like regular insulation may be an R-6 or R-24 and are used to determine heating/cooling loads.)
>>>I’m glad she got some fudge for dessert.<<<
So, guess what she said about lunch.....
“Dad, can I just have fudge for lunch?”
It is really the creamiest fudge I think I have ever made and sure tastes good...
Oh, and I didn’t measure either... 2 really large globs of peanut butter, whatever honey was in the bottom 2 inches of the honey jar, and oh, maybe a cup of those dark chocolate chips. Not exactly by the recipe, but Mmmmm Mmmmmm Good.
>>>Buying real estate, now that is the way to go<<<
Well, if you are into bargains, they are out there right now... They just reported on the Sheriff sale of properties in Sussex County here. 46 properties up for auction - 1 sold.
The other 45 were returned to the banks. They will be soon going to great lengths to unload them.
I just have a hard time getting enthused in buying foreclosed homes... It would leave a ‘blood money’ feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know, someone will buy them - but I would rather sleep well not having that to think about.
