Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Not only the State Dept....Glen Beck had a break down a few nights ago of where AIG’s bailout money went. The bonuses were a miniscule amount (and I might add, used to direct our focus away from the real scam). The majority, about 60 billion, went to banks in Europe! Another 40 G went to American banks. Weren’t we supposed to be bailing out OUR economy, not Europe’s? /s<<<

And don’t forget the payoffs to crooks and our elected ones.

This whole mess is smelling more and more every day.

When they make a production of it all, then we are missing something that is far more important, wonder what it is?

Do you normally get up that early? <<<

5 am is the middle of the night for me, bedtime can come any time.

That is the one thing that I promised myself, NO clocks, and the only one here that works is the computer clock.

I eat and sleep, when I decide to do so.

The other thing, is I swore to never again iron and I haven’t in 13 years.

1. It is too good!!!

2. It is too easy to make!!!<<<

But Honey and Peanut Butter are good for you.

I have not made this recipe, but did receive a gift of peanut butter fudge once, the other half of the box was the normal fudge and I liked the peanut butter fudge better.

Why, you could thin it with more honey, use it on your freshly ground wheat bread and call it a topping, and to make some of ‘them happy, go ahead and sprinkle a little cinnamon on the top.

I am so glad that you liked the recipe, LOL, that is the result that I dream of.

OK, maybe I am being a bit cynical this morning... But when the President goes on a nightly talk show and equates his bowling score to an equivalent Special Olympics one, I remain a skeptic of their genuine sincerity.<<<

You missed the truth, he told the truth and no one caught it.

If I am right, Special Olympics is for folks who have problems, mental and physical?

If so that is the class that he belongs in, for he sure as hell has a lot of problems, the communism has eaten his soul and without the soul, well even making it to a special Olympics is difficult, for some of them do not have a speech tele- prompter and can speak their few words, from their souls.

Is it just me, or do others also lack confidence in their motivations?<<<

I have no confidence in any of their actions, only fear.

>>>I remain a skeptic of their genuine sincerity.<<<

Oh boy, here I was calling for them to plant a garden a week or so ago, and when they do, I don’t cut them any slack...

I really wish them well with their garden - May their arugula and artichokes prosper.

I hope that millions follow the example and start growing their own!<<<<

Well, I was in a bad mood all day yesterday, but the above is making me smile.

For, if he grows a garden and gives any of it away, then he is breaking the new garden laws......arrest him first.

The White House Garden will do more for the United States, than any one action that he takes, it is a wonderful move and I am not going to fuss about it being Organic, for what I buy in the store is not, I don’t even want to know what I am really eating, for I must eat.

His garden, started from some of the greenie’s, those that are pushing for gardening on other folks vacant land, and I have been running across the posts and sites on it for months, I even signed their petition.

I am hoping that the lefties, follow him, like the lemmings that they really are and we see food growing all over the country.

And maybe more flowers for the soul to feed on.

***How can he sign the farm bill, with the personal garden clauses, when he has a personal garden???***

A friend of mine, in Northern California, owned an acre of nice land, 40 or 50 years, then about 10 years ago, he got the idea to live on it, build the whole works.

He discovered that the land had been zoned for nothing higher than a Strawberry field, FOR IT MIGHT RUIN THE VIEWS OF THE OTHER HOMES THERE, if he put a building on it.

Any thing growing at the White House, should be allowed in any garden in the country, for you know the White House is not zoned for farming.

We need to donate him some of the Texas 8’ tall 6 shooter corn, aka as field corn.

So pray he does get the garden in quickly, so others will want a garden, for if it goes as I think it will, it will be interesting.

Be sure to read that Laurie Roth post above about gardening being evil, I did not dare post it all, as she is good and speaks what the truth is, all of it.

Maybe I am recalling all the trouble that our teenagers had, in following bill clinton’s teaching, that the oral sex with monica was not really sex.

There was some serious problems in the schools and with the teens, for they were really into it not being ‘sex’ and the diseases were flying, from the lack of protection.

I recall how the liberal men would call the talk shows and say it was not really sex, so I want to see how the seminar callers from the liberal side handle “It really is an organic garden”.

Smiling, cussing and laughing, granny

LOL, Good Morning from NC. No , there is no hiding anymore for us citizens.. I was a Big promoter of ggoolle in the early days of website creation,, I placed it above the engines of the day , lycos,altavista,etc..(most are now defunct), because it was and still is a very good engine..

what i have found now is the overabundance of 3rd party cookies, hence i block them . and since i’m dialup as opposed to broadband, I keep it as streamlined as i can.

on another note we have our greenhouse cover ready but the wind wont give up long enough to attach it.. anyway we are ahead of schedule for our climate (it's 34 deg now..)

BTW haven't seen 10AC lately, hope work on the first 5k to download is in works ,, anything I can do to assist please let me know..

WND
IN THE MILITARY
Guess what Murtha has been given by the Navy!
Honored with Public Service Award, bloggers erupt in outrage

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa.

The U.S. Navy awarded U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., its Distinguished Public Service Award, triggering an Internet campaign to have Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter withdraw it.

Murtha, who publicly accused U.S. Marines of cold-blooded murder in a firefight in Haditha, Iraq, and was caught on camera in the Abscam scandal appearing to negotiate a bribe, was honored by the Navy for his "selfless devotion to the Nation's Sailors and Marines."

The award credits him with making sure the military services "were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism."

"His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history," the honor said.

Through shocking behind-the-scenes stories, Sen. Tom Coburn documents what you already suspect – elected representatives put politics and their own reelection bids ahead of principles. "Breach of Trust" names names from both parties.

It continued, "As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha's tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

An online petition that appeared almost immediately already has collected more than 6,200 signatures.

It was set up by Gabe Ledeen of VetsForFreedom.org.

"John Murtha deserves no such award. He has routinely and deliberately undermined the United States military, slandered servicemen serving in combat, and caused irreparable damage to our international reputation," the petition says.

"While serving as a representative from Pennsylvania, Murtha called Marines from 3d Battalion, 1st Marines 'cold blooded killers' who 'murdered innocent civilians.' Before an investigation into the Haditha incident was even conducted, Murtha went on numerous television news programs and announced that the Marines 'went into houses and killed women and children,'" the petition continues.

"He said, 'There's no question in my mind about what happened here. There was no gunfire, they killed four people in a taxi...24 people were killed.' When asked specifically if he claimed that innocent civilians were intentionally executed by Marines, he said, 'That's exactly what happened.' Not content to slander those Marines directly involved, he went on to claim that if these Marines were not punished, 'other Marines would say well I'll do the same thing.' Murtha then continued to use this incident to lobby for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, citing it as evidence that our military was incapable of winning the war," the petition said.

Eight Marines ultimately were charged in the incident. But charges were dropped against six, and one was found innocent in a court-martial. The last case has been delayed indefinitely.

"Despite the facts, John Murtha refuses to apologize to those he slandered," the petition said.

"We the undersigned are appalled that the Secretary of the Navy would bestow the Department's highest award for a non-employee to John Murtha after his vile and despicable attacks against U.S. servicemen. This petition is a vehicle to express our bitter disappointment at this betrayal of our combat veterans. Congressman John Murtha should apologize for slandering the Marines of 3/1, and for undermining the efforts of those servicemen and women who fought in Iraq. If he does not, the Secretary of the Navy should rescind this award as a sign of his unwavering support for those who served in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom," the petition says.

At PajamasMedia.com, a commentator wrote: "I don't think I've ever been number 4 on a petition before, but the outrage was immediate."

The commentary said anyone who wasn't sure should look up the video of Murtha in the Abscam sting.

Murtha also now is facing a lawsuit from one of the Marines he accused of murder, and at LittleGreenFootballs.com, a commentator wrote: "Yes, that's the same John Murtha who accused the Haditha Marines of being murderers without evidence, before their trial, then refused to apologize when all charges against them were dropped."

At Noliinsipientiuminiuriaspati, which claims to mean "Don't Let the Turkeys Get You Down," the opinion was concise.

"Murtha is a disgrace to Country, Congress, and the Marine Corps."

And at Ace of Spaces, the writer said, "I hope this causes an active duty revolt."

One location where there was boasting was Murtha's own website.

In the most recent election, Murtha faced a strong challenge, especially after he labeled his own constituents "rednecks" and "racists."

In the Haditha case, WND has reported extensively on the long battle by Marines against criminal charges. One defendant, Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, sued Murtha for libel.

The case only developed after Murtha publicly accused the Marines of murder. His statements came after a military investigation of the firefight found "no indication" that the Marines had "intentionally targeted, engaged and killed noncombatants."

Murtha previously drew attention in the late 1970s as a target in the FBI Abscam sting in which authorities probed influence-peddling on Capitol Hill.

Murtha escaped indictment in 1980 by a single grand jury vote despite being captured on video contemplating a $50,000 bribe, which he ultimately decided not to accept "at this point."

"I expect to be in the [expletive deleted] leadership of the House," Murtha said on the profanity-laced video.

In the Abscam case, U.S. Sen. Harrison Williams, D-N.J., and six House members agreed on camera to take bribes from FBI agents posing as Arab sheiks.

Murtha's comments to the "Arab sheik's agent" were: "I'm not interested – at this point. If we do business awhile, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't."

"I want to deal with you guys awhile before I make any transactions at all, period," Murtha explained. "After we've done some business, well, then I might change my mind. ... I'm going to tell you this. If anybody can do it – I'm not B.S.-ing you fellows – I can get it done my way. There's no question about it."

In addition to a low wind condition, please try to pick the warmest day you can to put the cover on. (Looks like Sunday will be nice for you - low wind and 60’s) This will help eliminate some of the flapping from a loose cover which increases the wear and decreases the longevity.

26. Don’t sell all stocks. The stock market will likely bounce back when the economy becomes more healthy. Don’t panic and sell all your stocks.

No, I don't buy that one. I'm really glad I 'paniced' and sold everything when the DOW was between $12K and $10K. Socialist governments don't encourage economic growth. It won't be bouncing back any time soon.
