Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Good luck, Granny!

If you manage to get back on, there are alot of computer savvy folks at FR (I’m not among them, LOL) who could walk you through how to uninstall the problem program.

I use Chrome from Google. It’s pretty easy to use, it has tabs, and it seems fast. You can shut it down and when you start it up again it remembers all the pages you had. I think Firefox does that too but maybe Chrome would connect to the internet. Keep trying Granny we need you!

Ruth,
Thank you so much for putting out the prayer request.

The Lord gives special response to FReeper Prayers...

Status update... Just got back from day at hospital - Everything looking UP! Medication has halted all seizure activity. They are now successfully dealing with some other issues in her medication.

While she is still in Intensive Care, she is scheduled to be moved to a regular room in the morning. For the first time she is more concerned with when she can come home than being so sick.

She had some severe problems twice during the seizures - one as soon as they put her in the ambulance for transport to the Children’s Hospital- she was not breathing on her own for 13 minutes following the seizure - they had to bag her the whole time and only very very slowly did she finally start breathing with a very shallow breath and gradually picked up. Trauma teams from both hospitals were in full contact with what was happening in the ambulance with both voice, data and video constantly. Communications are fantastic. The Transport trauma team is also the absolute best. However, we were on pins and needles for the whole trip.

She had another series of them after we arrived at the A.I. duPont hospital - they had a total of 13 people working on her and I think 7 were MD’s. They certainly have a super staff up there and they work with each patient like the Mayo Clinic does - a whole team and then they all discuss each case and consider all options before deciding on course of action. But during a crisis, they know their part and really are God’s Miracle Workers.

Sorry I don’t have time right now to thank each and everyone for their prayers - please pass on my gratitude for me.

Look forward to getting back in the swing of preparedness with everyone.

p.s. Ran into WalMart to pick up a couple of things early this morning for Christi. Cashier was commenting on how many were shopping and buying large quantities of food and preparedness items... He said ‘What are they expecting? Armageddon?’ I simply told him that it was much better to be prepared than sorry... It was his decision to make, and he was going to have to live with that decision... He really gave me a puzzled look when I said that.

One of the nurses aides who was monitoring Christi said she had heard me talking to one of the others and wanted to ask me what she was doing wrong in canning her tomatoes - - She wasn’t adding any lemon juice for acid or vitamin C and she was only processing them for 5 or 10 minutes... Couldn’t figure why they didn’t seal and why they were funky when she opened them... (Of course I wrote out the steps for her and the reasons along with the proper hot bath method and times...)

Seems people are awakening!

Thanks again,
Cal

Please feel free to share any or all of this with the thread - finest FReepers and the finest People in the world.

Thank you for the infor on the computer, I will give it a thought, I don’t know enough about the inside working to play too much with it.

I have spent hours on it already.

Good advice and I am thankful, I will try to figure out the restore part, as I have heard of doing that.

Thank you for the prayers, I just posted a letter from Dela where.
