Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

When I lived alone I lost 20 pounds and lived on smoked turkey from the WalMart deli and sliced tomatoes.

Now I have someone to cook for who thinks I am a gourmet cook... only I am really just a home cook. But it made me gain 30 pounds. ~sigh~

Do you have one of those oatrollers? And is that something that would grind wheat?

I don’t think I’ve ever had motion sickness in my life. But, I’ve never had a chance to have it on the sea so I don’t know about that.

My biggest worry about doing the Richard Petty Experience was that I’d get something like that. Didn’t happen. I’m glad. But, I had to wonder beforehand.

I don’t do much on the stove cooking, as I pass out and it could be a fire.

I use the crockpot and it is my storage food that i fix, I buy from Walton feed.com for every day use, not the planned set ups as I know what I will use.

LOL

And there is no soy in there.

I have regular canned foods and am loosing too many of them, they are bulging in a year or less.

There is no way that i will ever be able to can again, but that is one beautiful photo.

No I don’t have one of those. But, looking at grain mills they sure are expensive!

I can’t figure how the drivers don’t get dizzy going around in circles so fast, particularly Bristol.

I get seasick too. We had a boat once upon a time and went back and forth to Catalina. Ugh.....they did not have those patches then.

I will have to think on emailing her the link to that post. It would be funny to do that but my birthday is next month and I wouldn't want to ruin my possible visit. LOL

The thought of that has kept me from ever being interested in a cruise. I have 2 friends who repeatedly take cruises but always report a day of seasickness. Okay. I don't want to spend a day of vacation that way!

Bristol and Richmond would have to be dizzying it seems. Maybe I need to see if I can sweet talk Lloyd into another one of those packages one day and drive at Bristol and find out. LOL it's as good an excuse as any to ask for another drive.

Mother Earth News had a great article that asked the reader if they could survive without electricity or WATER. It made me think. I guess I could do without :gasp: internet but not having water is a different story.

No, you do not want a $400.00 one to grind grain for 2 people and it won’t work with no electric....LOL for that price, it should include a generator.

Maybe JD will be able to help out, he did a lot of research on them last year and I don’t know which one he bought.

I know a man, who took the old hand crank meat grinder, rigged it with a pully and belt and grinds his grain with a fully charged battery [car type], guess there is a 12 volt motor turning the pulley/belt.

My hand cranked one was stolen, my fault for having out in the shed, to make room.

I’m forcing myself to have a second dose of medicine tonight.

I tried that honey cinnamon remedy on some bread fresh out of the oven.

Dunno what ailment I’m got that I’m trying to remedy but the medicine works so good I’m having some more.

Electric and water.....

I was born in Texas and we did not have electric, for water we went to the windmill, chased the cows away and dipped a bucket in the large watering tank.

When we moved to Arizona, we did get electric, but did not have a well for several years.

In the beginning, any thing that held a quart of water, was filled a the stand pipe at the Irrigation district.

In time we got larger containers and in time a 500 gallon tank on a trailer, a 2,000 gallon storage tank and had lots of water, when we hauled it.

The tanks were for the animals and livestock, we still hauled in whatever held water for the house.

You learn to do odd things and reuse water, I simply will not rinse dishes under running water.

My bathtub leaks and I have a big bowl, at least 3 gallon size that collects the water and it upsets my sister when she comes and I want that water used for the cats, she only knows of water in the spigot.... She was born in California.

It has been so cold here, that I have been running the faucets at night, as I have old pipes and they freeze and bust.

So I am filling all the empty coffee containers, the large ones hold almost a garden, I will have water that might need boiled if our local water company goes down, as it has in the past and I am going to put it where the sun hits it and set plants on them...

LOL, I live alone, so if I want to stack them to the ceiling, no one can complain.

My kitchen sink drains on trees, the bathtub onto the front yard and I have a giant mulberry tree there to break the southern sun.

When I could still do the laundry, it drained on a native tree and I had planted bamboo there.

Old habits, but not willing to drop them.
