Natural Health

Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

Thank you for the ping and information you are providing here. I recently, on the recommendation of Stars & Stripes Forever, purchased some Ivermectin paste.

During Covid I found a doctor who prescribed the pills for me ( yikes over $150) but I know it pulled me through Covid. I haven't yet taken the paste but very interested in following some of these posts to gain knowledge.

Thank you.

The IVM tablets from India are very cheap, shipping is the main cost, when a few boxes are purchased, price goes down for each box. I like to keep a few boxes on hand, currently taking for cancer which I discovered about a week ago.

If you have a link, can you post it? Easier than getting from India probably.

This link was given to me by a pharmacist. He said that some of his customers recommended it for those who don’t have a prescription.

Thanks for posting the link. Ordering from India also needs no Rx, but takes longer.

I found this today on Instagram by Dr. Pete Sulack: He had brain cancer. He puts one drop of Frankincense on his thumb and puts it on the roof of his mouth. There is a video, but if you don’t have Insta, he has a website:
https://drpetesulack.com/
🔥Frankincense has been used for centuries—
But now the science is catching up:

• Boswellic acids in frankincense reduce inflammation and support brain healing
→ (Ammon et al., Planta Medica, 1991)

• Has anticancer effects and induces apoptosis in tumor cells
→ (Frank et al., BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2006)

• Supports immune modulation, gut repair, and oral health
→ (Ni et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2012)

I used it throughout my cancer healing journey—
And still do.

Scullcap and Slippery Elm - very different herbs, very useful. I take Scullcap tincture occasionally to help with sleeping.

Scullcap

Aerial portions
Herb powder 1 - 3 teaspoons
Tincture 10 -30 drops

Considered more effective as a tincture.

Look for the Latin name Scutellaria lateriflora, as another herb is often sold as scullcap -gernmander, Teucrium)
Properties: nervine, sedative, anti-spasmodic
Uses: It relaxes nervous tension, induces calm and counteracts sleeplessness. It eases premenstrual tension, strengthens the brain, is useful in the treatment of chorea, epilpsy and seizures generally. It is often combined with valerian and other nervines for a broader action.

It is one of the best herbs to use to break addictions and to ease the problems associated with drug and alcohol withdrawal. for such a condition, a quarter to half cup of tea should be taken every hour or two, tapering off as the symptoms subside. It is a good brain tonic to promote focus and calm.

Slippery Elm

Inner bark (powdered)

Properties: nutritive, demlucent, expectorant, emollient, astringent, vulnerary

Uses: Slippery Elm is used to treat sore throat, coughs, bleeding from the lungs and other lung problems, dry throat, wasting diseases, digestive problems, and nausea. This is one of the most muciliaginous herbs and a healing gruel may be made by slowly mixing cool water into the powdered herb until desired consistency is obtained. (I’ve used slightly warmish too). This may be flavored with a little honey or pinch of cinnamon and is a good food, even for infants when there is difficulty keeping food down, or for invalids. It may be given int any wasting disease.

It is very helpful for ulcers and colitis, and as it is strenghtening, it can be used freely.

It can be used alone or mixed with other herbs as a poultice for bedsores, burns and inflamed surfaces. (I never tried these).

When hub had very bad acid reflux and his esophogas was inflamed, this was one of the herbs we used.

Pinging the list to Burdock. Has many uses, I am never without this herb. Also a list of herbs for Edema and other conditions. Freepmail me to get on/off this list.

Burdock
Parts used: Usually Root, also leaves and seeds
Tissues: plasma, blood
Properties: Alterative, diuretic, bitter tonic, diaphoretic, antipyretic
Indications: eczema, psoriasis, rashes, acne, liver diseases, fever, lymphatic congestion, nephritis, edema, hypertension, boils, gout, arthritis, indigestion (pitta/hot type).

Seeds and root (all I’ve ever used or seen easily available is root powder) are deeply cleasning to the liver, blood and lymphatic system. Valuable in treating heat related or inflammatory skin disorders including acne, boils, eczema, and psoriasis. To relieve itching, use in conjuction with neem, manjistha, barberry, or turmeric.

Burdock is also rich in minerals and vitamins, including iron, magnesium, manganese and thiamine. The roots are strong and deep, and in Japanese cooking fresh roots are called gobo and used in soups and stir frying, I used to buy in Hawaii and cooked and ate them. Due to its secondary sweet taste (bitter first, but cooking gobo is not bitter), it does not provoke vata (excess air) or reduce tissues unnecessarily as other bitter herbs can do.

Burdock supports liver function, clears excess heat/inflammation, aids digestion especially the hot kind such as acidity. It can be used in soups with onions, ginger and other vegetables, especially good when sick with flu or other similar illness. As a cooling diuretic, it helps to remove excess heat/pitta from the body, supports healthy kidneys, expels uric acid, and can treat edema, gout, and psoriatic arthritis. I use in heart formulas for people who have a tendency towards edema, or high blood pressure, as well as for toxic (heat) blood conditions or skin problems. Recently used it for someone with lupus who noticed improvement but did not want to continue taking herbs, also in a bad case of acne (cured yay!). Also for a friend’s young son who had repeated boils, took care of them quickly.

Herbs for Edema, Kidneys and Liver, these herbs do have more uses as well.

Manjishta
Clears liver, moves blood, wound healing, good for itchy or inflammatory skin conditions, and also said to help reduce or break up tumors or cancer.

Shilajit
Edema, rejuvenates and cleanses kidneys (and many other uses)

Guduchi
Edema, Supports kidney and liver function, counteracts toxic effects of drugs/chemicals, supports immune system, good for IBS and gastric reflux. Helps with seasonal and environmental allergies. May have use in cancer.

Burdock
Edema, helps kidney and liver function, deeply cleansing to liver and blood, Useful in infectious illness or “hot” skin problems like acne and boils.

Pippali
For fatty liver: 1/2 t. pippali, 1/2 t. ghee and I t. honey mixed and eaten first thing in the morning followed by a cup of warm water

Bhumyamalaki
Edema, Protects liver function, one of the best herbs for liver

Bhringaraj
Removes toxins from liver, for enlarged liver, good for gall bladder and blood

Gokshura
Edema, all kidney and urinary problems including urinary incontinence. I think Gokshuradi Guggulu more potent for incontinence.

Gokshuradi guggulu
Rejuvenative tonic for kidneys, fatty liver
