Natural Health

Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

I am never without peppermint herb and EO. I’d grow it if I had the right dirt. Has to be kept moist to grow well.

TWICE I put Peppermint EO in my eyes because I did not label the bottle, I thought it was rosewater which I use frequently.

I learned it does not cause blindness but the amount of eyecups/rinsing under the faucet was incredible. My husband sure had a laugh. Once he realized I didn’t blind myself.

I pot a small cup with peppermint oil in it on my kitchen counter. Threw in a couple of clothespins to wick the oil up. I haven’t had ants in two years—and this condo was built on a gigantic ant colony! They would invade every summer and make us miserable. Nothing kept them at bay... until the peppermint essential oil.

Had an ant attack in the trailer while camping. I fought them back and put another jar of oil out on that counter too. Ants stopped trying to invade in two hours!

YES! I discovered during an ant invasion that they HATE peppermint oil. I refuse to kill ants or any bugs unless they’re the biting kind, nor do I use any toxic pesticides which are harmful to good bugs too and people. I actually studied up on ant behavior and I really like them. Just not 1000 of them in the house.

Currently I put a small yogurt lid in a corner with a spoon of honey so the few ants in the house don’t wander around and get stepped on, they just eat honey and go away.

Oinging the list [freepmail to get on/off] - a FReeper asked about blood pressure. Here are links to herbs that help with blood pressure and, as is usual with herbs, help the heart in other ways; and even non-heart uses. Herbs are amazing.

Hawthorne Berry

Jatamansi

A number of herbs for heart health in general, including BP

Arjuna

Since I have had some heart issues for several years, including BP, I have experience with these herbs and daily take a heart blend I make using these. Hibiscus I take separately and need to use it more. Hibiscus makes a nice tea. The others - well, mix ‘em up, take a good teaspoon, pour boiling water, let sit until drinkable temperature, add honey if desired, and swaller it down. It keeps my heart behaving itself most of the time.

I find that fear, anxiety, strife like arguments, other peoples’ dramas, reading too much bad news - really affects my heart. And more so the older I get. Maintaining peace of mind is very helpful for heart health. Regular exercise appropriate to age and health condition is also very important. Good walks (ie not strolling) is one of the best excercise.

I’ve had issues with walking for 3 years and working on that because it is definitely impacting the heart/lungs.

Thank you. I used to walk 45 minutes to an hour a day for years. Of course I wasn’t old then. HAHAHA My elderly parents used to walk every day for an hour up through their 80s. Hub is helping me with back treatments. Back got messed up (biopsy/surgery in 2019) and made it impossible to walk, got better/worse but really hoping to get going walking without assistance asap.

What kind? There are many...acid reflux is one. I did a lot of research about that as hub got it VERY badly. Now cured but still prone to it so he has to be strict about diet and there are many herbs that can assist. Tell me symptoms (via freepmail if you prefer) and that will help.

I try to put in that amount of walking/running time, most days. Three - four miles.

Do you have access to a pool, to do exercises, even walking in the pool (with floats)?

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with back issues. Hubby’s been seeing an acupuncturist, for his. It’s helping!!

Agree ... walking is so good for the lungs/heart. Keep up the good work, on that goal. You’ll get there, before you know it. 💞

No pool around plus can’t handle chlorine. If there was a good acupuncturist around, I’d go. closest good one is 40 miles. You are active! must be younger than me. :-)

I had serious heart incidents and had to find out what to do. Doc told me if I had again to call 911. I refused....now much better, sometimes BP isn’t totally cooperative. Peace of mind is vital for me.
