Obama amputates our nuclear arms

By: Charles Krauthammer

...snippet...

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”

Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)

However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.

This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.

Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?

The naivete is stunning.

Big problem loophole re: private planes and no-fly list! One almost collided with passenger jet Reagan Intl

A 120-seat United Airlines plane bound for Reagan National Airport from Chicago narrowly avoided colliding with a business jet departing from Dulles last Monday, the latest of 22 recent potentially dangerous mistakes by air traffic controllers who command the skies above Washington.

The United Airbus 319 was within 15 seconds of colliding with a 22-seat Gulfstream jet before, an internal FAA document shows, an onboard warning system ordered the pilots to take evasive action. The United pilot reported seeing the smaller jet pass just behind him.

“It’s the air traffic controller that’s supposed to control this situation, not” the onboard warning system, said John DeLisi, deputy director of aviation for the National Transportation Safety Board. “When it had to kick in and do its thing, that wasn’t a good controller.”

The number of times planes have come too close for comfort in the region in the past six months has surpassed the total of 18 the previous year. Nationwide, air traffic controllers committed 949 errors last year

Quite a story at #835 granny...Brian Patrick Regan (codes, spy). Thanks for that link.<<<

You are welcome.

Now, if you want codes, do you ever catch the long lists of codes that are read over the short wave radio’s?

Usually a long list of number clusters, sometimes hours long, it has been going on for years.

There is someone who reports them from Michigan, and other places around the world, and of course there are folks attempting to break the codes.

Russia, Cuba and others are still using them.

I found a group that collects them and follows them, LOL, I subscribe to the list, but don’t understand the codes.

They sometimes mention a bit of history and google will fill it in.

Thanks for that link to Mark Siljander in post #864, granny. I was wondering what happened to him (I googled and read some recent stuff about him last night and forgot to thank you).<<<

It is a shame that they will sell their souls for a few dollars.

I would love to know how many of our politicians really should be in jail?

Reconciliation or Extremism?: Tracking the Divisions among Egypt’s Jihadi Leaders

Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri

Some time has passed since the May 30 death of al-Qaeda’s chief of operations in Afghanistan and third-in-command Mustafa Abu al-Yazid. Surprisingly, however, no eulogy has been issued by al-Qaeda’s second-in-command, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri. Al-Yazid and al-Zawahiri shared the same cell in Egypt for being involved in the plot to assassinate President Anwar Sadat in 1981. His death similarly went unremarked by former and current jihadis still in Egypt.

Al-Zawahiri’s silence after al-Yazid’s death triggered questions within jihadist internet forums, not only because of the historic relations between the two Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) leaders, but also because of al-Yazid’s status and important role within al-Qaeda for over 22 years. Al-Yazid was a member of al-Qaeda’s Shura Council, responsible for many of the group’s largest operations, such as the 9/11 plot in which he was actively involved. Al-Yazid was also directly involved in the planning of the December 30, 2009 suicide bombing of the CIA’s forward operating base in Khost, an operation that killed seven CIA officers and a senior Jordanian intelligence officer (see Terrorism Monitor, June 12).

Plane nearly hit our bus, says driver Send to a friend

By George Sembony, Tanga

The driver of a bus that was narrowly missed by a military aircraft, which crash-landed on the Segera-Chalinze highway on Tuesday, says he came close to death.

But the pilot, Major Cuthbert Leguna and his trainee Lt Andrew Yohana Kijanga of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), died.

“It missed the bus by a whisker. It’s terrible. I saw death and I still see it whenever I think of the accident,” 60-year-old Abdallah Hamimu Kaborogo told The Citizen on Wednesday. “It just appeared from nowhere and descended dangerously towards our vehicle.”

Mr Kaborogo is the driver of the 60-seater Simba Coach Bus, popularly known as Simba Mtoto, which plies the Tanga-Dodoma route.

He has been driving vehicles for years and has never come across such a horrifying incident before. He worked in several countries including Saudi Arabia.

He and his passengers live to tell their story, but the two pilots perished. Maj Leguna, 41, and Lt Kijanga, 31, were buried at their home areas in Mpwapwa and Singida respectively.

One of the recent buyings of Kuznetsov’s mother, a pensionary, is an apartment worth $1,640.000 in this luxury house in Moscow.

Russia’s Internal Affairs Ministry’s Department for Own Safety says it will begin a “check” on Russian Militsiya lieutenant colonel Artem Kuznetsov, who is publicly accused by a group of American lawyers of illegitimately imprisoning and then torturing Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky to death. Later, head of Investigating Committee of the Prosecution Office Alexander Bastrykin said he will “personally check” the course of investigation into actions by Kuznetsov and his coworkers. In 2007 and 2008, Magnitsky worked in Russia for American investment fund company Hermitage Capital Management and was involved in the disclosure of a large-scale corruption among several top law enforcement officials in Moscow.

Lawyers concerned with the death of Magnitsky, which occurred in Butyrka prison on November 16 of last year, started the bilingual website russian-untouchables.com, where they presented evidence of Artem Kuznetsov’s alleged efforts to cloak the crimes. As reported by the website’s authors, Kuznetsov was a key player in a US$230 million theft from the Russian government and then successfully brought criminal charges against everyone who reported his theft.

The fire spared two newer school buildings that housed classrooms, performance stages and a cafeteria — completed at the end of 2008 — and a few portable buildings. Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, San Jose fire officials are treating the blaze as suspicious.
