Obama amputates our nuclear arms

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”
Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)
However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.
This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.
Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?
The naivete is stunning.

In a new statement titled “Who will Take Revenge for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui?”, Al-Qaeda deputy leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri issues messages to two intended audiences, the Americans and the residents of Pakistan.
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is a Pakistani scientist sentenced to 86 years in prison by a court in New York for trying to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.
The audio recording, which is four minutes and 33 seconds in duration, was posted on the Shumukh Al-Islam jihadi web forum along with transcripts in Arabic, Urdu, Pashtu, and Farsi.
The following are excerpts from Al-Zawahiri’s message:

Plane grounded in SLC by man’s suspicious behavior
An American Airlines flight carrying 146 passengers to Dallas was grounded in Salt Lake City after an emergency situation involving suspicious acts by a passenger Thursday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m., the MD88 plane landed at the Salt Lake City International Airport on its way from Portland to Dallas, said Salt Lake City Department of Airports spokeswoman Barbara Gann.
Gann said a passenger on flight 1476, “was behaving strangely and displayed suspicious behavior.”....

More on the American Airlines “unruly” passenger:
John Heller, a passenger on the flight, tells KSL the “unruly” passenger wanted to use the restroom before the flight left Portland, but a flight attendant told him he had to wait until after take-off.
Once the flight was in the air, the passenger apparently used the restroom three to four times and that raised suspicions. Passengers nearest to him alerted the flight attendant that they were uncomfortable with what they were seeing. (snip)

First of all, thanks for the pings the last few days. I’m still trying to catch up.
I was in eight different airports in the past five days. With all the alerts, threats, etc., we were especially vigilant. We saw nothing out of the ordinary, thank God. But airport security was unusually tight. Seems like it took twice as long to get through all the check points. That is a good thing, but it is rather sad that we have to go through this. Air travel, while necessary for many of us, is no fun at all. Can’t even get peanuts or pretzels anymore....:)

Havana, Cuba (CNN) — A domestic passenger plane with 61 passengers and 7 crew members onboard crashed in central Cuba Thursday, state media reported.
State-run Radio Reloj said there were no survivors.
The Aerocaribbean plane was carrying 28 foreign passengers and 40 Cubans, state media said.
The plane was traveling from the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba and heading to the country’s capital of Havana, the state-run website Cubadebate reported.

Mohamed Mohamed Mohamud, 38, appeared in federal court Wednesday to answer to charges that he was involved in a conspiracy to provide money and other aid to al-Shabaab in Somalia, which U.S. authorities have designated a foreign terrorist organization.
Mohamud and co-defendant Issa Doreh, 54, pleaded not guilty. A third defendant, Basaaly Saeed Moalin, 33, pleaded not guilty to similar charges Tuesday.
