Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”
Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)
However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.
This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.
Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?
The naivete is stunning.

Bangalore-bound FedEx flight makes emergency landing in Mumbai

A Bangalore-bound FedEx flight from Dubai made an emergency landing here this evening after it was diverted to the city airport following suspected fire in the plane’s cargo-hold, an airport official said.
The flight landed here safely, the official said.
“Full emergency was declared for FedEx flight 5062 from Dubai to Bangalore, which was diverted to Mumbai due to suspected fire in the cargo hold,” a Mumbai Airport spokesperson said here.
The flight landed safely at 18.24pm, the spokesperson added.

A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400, registration G-VXLG performing flight VS-74 from Orlando,FL (USA) to Manchester,EN (UK), was enroute about 200nm south of Gander when the crew reported a male unruly passenger (44) on board and declared PAN. The airplane diverted to Gander where the aircraft landed safely on runway 03 about 35 minutes later. The passenger was taken into custody by Royal Canadian Mounted Police and faces seven charges.
The aircraft reached Manchester with a delay of 2.5 hours.
If I entered his “real thoughts”, I would probably need an exorcism.

We, the
undersigned - consisting of four European blogs, one Canadian blog, and one
American blog - have written this post jointly as a public call for our
American colleagues to take up the cause of the Austrian feminist and
anti-jihad activist Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff.
Geert Wilders is well-known to most American conservative and libertarian
bloggers, but Elisabeth’s case is not so prominent. Like Mr. Wilders, she
faces trial for reporting factual information about Islam. Her “crime” was
to conduct public seminars in which she described Islamic doctrine, quoted
from the Koran, and explained to her listeners what she considers the
dangers of Islam.
Like Mr. Wilders, Elisabeth has been charged with “hate speech” for her
words. Unlike Mr. Wilders, however, Elisabeth is a private citizen, a wife,
and the mother of a small child. She lacks the major resources necessary to
defend herself against the well-funded organs of the state which seek to
persecute her.
Elisabeth will go on trial in Vienna on November 23rd, in what is clearly a
political action intended to silence anyone who dissents against the
prevailing multicultural orthodoxy.
We, her European and North American supporters, have formed Elisabeth’s
Voice to ensure that she is not silenced. By appealing for financial aid, we
hope to ensure that her defense is well-funded. By appealing for publicity,
we hope to ensure that her case is well-known, not just in Austria and the
rest of Europe, but across the entire Western world.
Americans may think that Elisabeth’s is a uniquely European plight, and has
nothing to do with them. But make no mistake about it: the same repression
is on its way to the United States of America. As the recent cases of Molly
Norris, Juan Williams, and Derek Fenton demonstrate, free speech may already
be taken away by non-juridical means. Dissent is even now being silenced in
schools and on college campuses, and politically incorrect expression is
cause for dismissal from both public and private employment.
The same types of “hate speech” laws that were used against Elisabeth in
Austria are being prepared for the United States through the work of the
United Nations. At the initiative of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference, the UN is on the verge of requiring all member states to pass
laws criminalizing “the defamation of religions, including Islam.”
Your president, Barack Hussein Obama, has indicated his support for the UN’s
proposed resolution. Time is running out for all of us. If we don’t stand up
now for people like Geert Wilders, Ezra Levant, Mark Steyn, and Elisabeth
Sabaditsch-Wolff, there will be no one to stand up for us later, when our
turn comes.

CARLSBAD — On Wednesday, a Carlsbad man filled out paperwork reporting the theft of 60 to 100 sticks of nitroglycerin-based dynamite, 80 blasting caps and 1,200 feet of detonator cord at the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, sending authorities scrambling to locate the explosive cache.
ECSO Capt. Jeff Zuniga said the stolen dynamite was 10 to 12 years old and had not been inspected for years. He said the particular type of stolen dynamite is known to break down and fuse together, causing it to become extremely volatile with age.
“An inadvertent bump or jolt could set this stuff off,” said Zuniga. “This incident poses a definite and serious risk to public safety.”
Zuniga said the owner of the explosives intimated to authorities that if all the dynamite was ignited at the same time the explosion would likely consume half of a city block.

Moscow’s Southeastern District has decided not to build a new mosque in a park after numerous complaints by local residents concerned about the potential increase in traffic and loss of green space, RFE/RL’s Russian Service reports.
“We have looked through the petitions sent by residents and came to the conclusion that there’s a possibility to relocate the [location of the planned] mosque,” Maria Yermakova, spokeswoman for Moscow’s Southeastern District, told RFE/RL. “There’s still no information about how and when — a final decision about the construction of the mosque will be made following public hearings.”

Two males in a black BMW ran a red light, struck and killed a male
pedestrian, struck the school bus. (School bus ended up on its side, appears
to be about 80 feet from point of impact.
These two ran from scene, but a construction worker chased, caught, and held
them until police arrived.
No mention of another automobile.
About 25 students NOT injured of about 44 total. Bus driver more seriously
injured (not listed as “serious” condition, but sounds like better than that
medical definition, and has been upgraded from early reports).
