***SNIP***The researchers used a number of techniques that are used when modeling real diseases, and the abstract ends with this dismal line: "We build up to a full scale simulation of an outbreak in the United States, and discover that for 'realistic' parameters, we are largely doomed." But Phys.Org relays a glimmer of hope by way of Alex Alemi, a grad student involved in the research: He says those who want to remain safe from the undead for as long as they can should head to the northern Rockies. He explains that while books and movies typically show an outbreak...

Bart the cat should be renamed zombie cat after he was hit by a car, buried and then crawled out of his grave five days later. According to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, they’ve seen many cases at their clinic but “this situation may take the cake!” They are now caring for a 2-3 year old black and white cat named Bart who was found by his owner after being hit by a car. The cat appeared to be lifeless and his owner, Ellis Hutson, buried him in a shallow grave. Five days later, the cat showed up in...

Reddit users were asked “What’s the laziest thing you’ve ever done?” And one former sailor’s response is so incredible we had to share it. We usually only write about Alabama-related things, so let’s just assume this took place aboard one of the Alabama-built Littoral Combat Ships. I was once on a US military ship, having breakfast in the wardroom (officers lounge) when the Operations Officer (OPS) walks in. This guy was the definition of NOT a morning person; he’s still half asleep, bleary eyed… basically a zombie with a bagel. He sits down across from me to eat his bagel...

Police have shot dead a man who stabbed three officers in a police station in central France. The 20-year-old reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest" in Arabic) as he carried out the attack in Joue-les-Tours, near the city of Tours, on Saturday. He ran into the station, pulled out a knife and attacked three officers who tried to calm him down, Le Figaro newspaper said.

I recently listened to an interesting podcast episode of Buddhist Geeks called “Creating Living Ritual” included a critique of modern Buddhism’s “dead” ritualism. The discussion included some thoughts about what modern ritual should include to be successful and ironically, many of those suggestions Joseph Smith included in the first endowment ceremony which have recently been removed or altered. It got me wondering: did Joseph Smith create better ritualistic practices than we have today? He goes on to lament that “Buddhist rituals, definitely including most Tantric Buddhist rituals, are nothing like that. They are dead, zombie rituals.” (emphasis mine) He also...

PHILADELPHIA -- Strangers passing by a goofy, dancing scarecrow were unsuspecting, believing it was a rare, cute photo opportunity for the Halloween season. What these people didn't know was that underneath this seemingly harmless, silly scarecrow costume was actually a vicious, terrifying zombie. Take a look below.

Monday through Friday, my full-time job is cleaning restrooms at Van Nuys High School. But that work is not the hardest part of my life. The hardest part is saying goodbye to my 4-year-old son when he asks me not to go to work again. In order to make ends meet, I also work weekends and nights. I know I’m lucky to have a full-time job as a facility attendant in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I’ve done that for 10 years, and some days are better than others, but I like the work, and my co-workers are a...

The U.S. military has always been the one place in government with a plan, forever in preparation mode and ready to yank a blueprint off the shelf for almost any contingency. Need a response for a Russian nuclear missile launch? Check. Have to rescue a U.S. ambassador kidnapped by drug lords? Got that covered. How about a detailed strategy for surviving a zombie apocalypse? As it turns out, check. Incredibly, the Defense Department has a response if zombies attacked and the armed forces had to eradicate flesh-eating walkers in order to "preserve the sanctity of human life" among all the...

Microsoft is helping the estimated hundreds of millions of customers still running Windows XP, which it stopped supporting earlier this month, by providing an emergency update to fix a critical bug in its Internet Explorer browser. Microsoft Corp rushed to create the fix after learning of the bug in the operating system over the weekend when cybersecurity firm FireEye Inc warned that a sophisticated group of hackers had exploited the bug to launch attacks in a campaign dubbed "Operation Clandestine Fox. ...

For your dose of undead, here is a short film called Perished. A man is trapped in a shed after his girlfriend/wife turns into a zombie during the zombie apocolypse, and has to find a way to survive. This is different from a lot of zombie films in that the guy is pretty smart and resourceful, rather than making obvious mistakes. Still doesn't help him much, though. Perished

Amid other environmental scourges, such as cold weather and viruses, Vermont beekeepers are seeing an influx of zombie bees. Obamacare Zombies: Now they are the ones being chased WASHINGTON, November 13, 2013 — President Barack Obama’s legions of Obamacare Zombies are in confusion with the meltdown of Obamacare. It is one crisis that Obama cannot cover-up. For once, the media could not help him by ignoring events, because insurance cancellation letters bypassed media and took bad news directly to the public. Unfortunately, exposing years of deceit required a personal crisis for millions, which for some is a life-and-death crisis. It is inexcusable that it took such disaster to shock these political zombies from their trances. Now it’s too late...
