GET OFF THE COUCH HARRY!!!
Voting in Maine.
My son and I are working as election clerks in Maine today. The polls open at 8 am and close at 8 pm. My son started at 7 am (turned the light on!) I will be working from 3 pm until the light are turned off and the ballots secured in lock boxes.
We have paper ballots that are scanned through a scanner. After the polls close the machine produces a paper tally.
From the time the polls open until the lights are turned off probably about 10:00 there must be at least one Republican election clerk and one Demcrat clerk present at all times. The clerks hand out ballots, assist voters with the scanner and most importantly verify the voter with the voter list.
Absentee ballots are brought over by an offical from city hall. The clerks verify the name and address against the voter registration list, then open the evelop and scan the ballot. ALL absentee ballots must be received by the Warden (person in charge) by the time the polls closed. No absentee ballots can be received after 8 pm. The polls close at 8:00 pm-if a voter is in line at 8 pm they can vote, if a potential voter arrives at 8:05 pm-too bad so sad.
Before 8:00 am all the ballots are counted. After closing the total of ballots cast plus spoiled ballots plus remaining ballots should equal the total ballots counted just before 8:00 am. After I return home I will post the results here from Ward 3, Ellsworth Maine.
