On November 30, four teens jumped a man in south St. Louis, using hammers to beat him to death. According to the St. Louis Bosnian, the victim was 32-year-old Zemir Begic. He was sitting in his car around 1 a.m. when the teens began banging on it. He stepped out of the car, and the teens attacked him until he was unconscious then left him for dead. Begic died, and surveillance video led to the capture of two of the suspects. One of them is 15 and the other is 16 years of age. This senseless beating death—which came on...

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at least a dozen buildings were set on fire, most of them destroyed. He said there were no reports of injuries. At least 29 people were arrested. "Those are businesses that may never come back. So, frankly, I'm heartbroken about that," Belmar said. "Now the good news is we have not fired a shot. As far as I know, we don't have any serious injuries to police officers, they got banged up a little bit with rocks, one lieutenant from the patrol got hit in the head with a glass bottle, but...

Ohio State senior quarterback Braxton Miller, considered by several polls to be among the preseason leaders to make a run at the Heisman Trophy, reinjured his right shoulder in practice this afternoon, sources told The Dispatch. The injury puts in jeopardy his playing status for the coming season. An OSU spokesman would not confirm the news, and coach Urban Meyer could not be reached for comment. But it likely means that redshirt-freshman J.T. Barrett will be the starter when the Buckeyes open the season against Navy on Aug.30 in Baltimore. Barrett moved ahead of sophomore Cardale Jones late last week...

In the face of another “Sharknado” TV movie (the even-more-inane “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” premiering Wednesday night on Syfy) there isn’t much for a critic to say except to echo what the characters themselves so frequently scream when confronted by a great white shark spinning toward them in a funnel cloud: “LOOK OUT!!”

Tonight's the night of The Second Coming! New York City. I hope the sharks bring their own picante sauce...

The secret to perfect biscuits is hotly contested: Lard or butter? Milk or buttermilk? Baking powder or soda? (Or both?) Every Southern home cook has an opinion, but these days, chefs from all over the country are joining in the conversation, digging through old church cookbooks and grandma’s recipe box to find the perfect version. Served simply with butter and jam, or as vehicles for fried chicken, sausage or sawmill gravy, these flaky little numbers are all delicious.

Actor and Democratic activist/contributor Richard Dreyfuss, who after 9-11 claimed a “lack of clarity” as to America’s reasons for war against terror, yesterday promoted an America of intellectually sophisticated children, unhampered by allegiance to any particular viewpoint. Speaking before the National Press Club, Dreyfuss lamented that adults are often “victims of political hypnosis,” and decried parental tendencies to pass on their political views to their children. Instead, America’s children need only be handed the tools of “reason” and “logic” to be “ sovereign.” He sniffed, “How do we not guarantee our gods will be our children’s gods?”

A new book by David Horowitz and Richard Poe has enraged the Left and alarmed many conservatives. It exposes the machinations of a radical clique working at the highest levels of government and finance to undermine American power. That book is The Shadow Party: How George Soros, Hillary Clinton and Sixties Radicals Seized Control of the Democratic Party. It hit the New York Times bestseller list in its first week in print. Here to tell us about The Shadow Partyis co-author Richard Poe, our esteemed colleague at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, where he serves as director of research. Mr....

The Volokh Conspirators and an interesting bunch of guys. It may not be their fault that they attract a bunch of nuts and Jacobins to their blog site. The individual contributors are capable of making reasonable-sounding arguments as to why the detention of enemy combatants should not be held indefinitely at Guantanamo (assuming you view our war against Islamic radicals as a civil police action in which the US military got involved). But, as I said, their arguments usually avoid the foam flecked comments that follow these postings. But suddenly, now that Obama has been elected, the subject has been...

C-Span2 televised a series of panel conferences from authors on the right and the left who have recently written books on President Bush. The conservative conferences were interesting, but devoid, I thought, of anything approaching hysteria about the left's unyielding assaults on the president. They were just discussions from sober panelists, addressing various aspects of media bias and the like. But the liberal panel -- and I only watched parts of it -- featured New York Times Columnist Paul Krugman, New York liberal Mark Green, Sidney Blumenthal, and various others. I just want to call your attention to two comments,...
