Following the raid by FBI officials on the Capitol Hill office of Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), there was immediate reaction by legislators. Did they express shock at what Rep. Jefferson was accused of doing? Did they make strong public statements denouncing corruption and promoting ethical policies and practices? No. Instead, congressional leaders criticized the FBI for coming on their “turf” and enforcing the laws of the land.
