WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) -- Rival groups of demonstrators led to some tense moments in Whitter Tuesday night. The event began as a pro-police rally, but a counter-demonstration group turned up as well. There were some minor skirmishes and police took at least a few people into custody. But the event was otherwise largely peaceful with a number of cars driving by with pro-police messages.

US President Donald Trump has said arming teachers could prevent school shootings like that which left 17 people dead last week in Florida. A staff member with a gun could end an attack "very quickly", he said. Mr Trump floated the proposal as emotional survivors of the 14 February massacre implored him to make sure it never happens again. The Republican president also backed calls for improved background checks on gun buyers.

SOUTH WHITTIER - Authorities said a man shot his 26-year-old son in the torso in self-defense after his offspring allegedly lunged at him with a knife Wednesday night. The father was trying to stop a fight between his son and the son’s girlfriend. Sheriff’s Lt. Cynthia McDaniel said the son, Stephen Turner Jr, was in stable condition Tuesday at a hospital. LA HABRA HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — More than a dozen teens were arrested Wednesday after they allegedly broke into a La Habra Heights home, threw a party and caused more than $1 million in damage, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Whittier police officers discovered more than $1 million worth of cocaine hidden in the floor boards of a car during a routine traffic stop, it was reported today. Ceasar Najar Vojorquez, 36, of Sonora, Mexico, was tailgating and swerving through traffic in a Chevrolet Meriva when a traffic officer stopped him near Esperanza Street and Whittier Boulevard at 9:50 a.m. yesterday, Whittier police spokesman Alan dela Pena told the Whittier Daily News. A California college has ordered a student-run conservative magazine to discontinue publication on campus. Shortly after publishing its first issue, editors of The Liberty Bell were told by officials at Whittier College that they could not distribute the magazine until it received official approval from the school's liberal-dominated publications board. WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Four family members, including an 8-year-old girl and a 70-year-old woman, were found stabbed to death in a home outside the city Saturday, authorities said. No arrests were made. A relative found the bodies and called police at about 11 a.m., but police said they probably died on Thursday. There were no signs of forced entry at the home but it appeared as if there was a struggle, said sheriff's Deputy Ray Peavey.
