Ukrainian officials announced on Friday that they had exhumed more than 400 bodies at a mass burial site near Izium, Kharkiv region, from which Russian troops recently retreated after a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Many of those buried there, they said, apparently died a violent death — bodies were found with their hands tied behind their backs, ropes around their necks, broken bones and gunshot wounds; some men had their genitalia severed. A Novosibirsk court launched a new trial on the illegal sales of corpses to a German scholar. The case is being tried for the third time. Previously, in November 2003 and July 2004, judges acquitted Vladimir Novosyolov, the chief of the Novosibirsk regional forensic department. However, both times prosecutors filed relevant petitions with higher instance courts and the court verdicts were cancelled, while the case was returned for reexamination. Police are investigating a fight at a Detroit music venue involving the lead singers of the White Stripes and Von Bondies.The fight between Jack White of the White Stripes and Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies broke out Saturday night at the Majestic Theatre Center, police said. Stollsteimer, 25, told police that White punched him seven times in the face. Police said Stollsteimer's right eye was bruised and swollen, and he was bleeding from his nose.
