ScienceDaily (Dec. 12, 2011) — New research published December 8 in the journal Science suggests it may be possible to use brain technology to learn to play a piano, reduce mental stress or hit a curve ball with little or no conscious effort. It's the kind of thing seen in Hollywood's "Matrix" franchise. Experiments conducted at Boston University (BU) and ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, recently demonstrated that through a person's visual cortex, researchers could use decoded functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to induce brain activity patterns to match a previously known target state and thereby improve performance...

I know the power of prayer so I humbly ask my fellow FReepers to pray that we find my son's glasses. You see, my 5 year old is legally blind in his left eye with his glasses. He has a whole slew of eye issues and late september had his 3rd eye surgery. We haven't been able to find his glasses in about a week and I'm getting pretty frantic. We're also awaiting word for winter lay-off's any day now. I almost expect hubby to come home with his lay off slip today. UGH. Our insurance only pays for one...

Halloween, 1918. The then “prophet” of the Mormon church, Joseph F. Smith, submits a “vision” of the dead he has “to the counselors in the First Presidency, the Council of the Twelve, and the Patriarch, and by them unanimously accepted…”(Gospel Doctrine, 2:277, published by The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1971) Joseph F. Smith, the nephew of Mormon founder Joseph Smith, had claimed that he saw “the hosts of the dead, both small and great...an innumerable company of the spirits of the just” (Lds Doctrine & Covenants, 138:11-12) -- and these spirits were just...

“When all else fails … vote from the rooftops.” That’s how a T-shirt logo advertising Michael Dukes’ radio show reads. What can that statement, in blood-red lettering over a black background and paired with the image of an assault rifle, possibly mean except that people who aren’t satisfied with election results should use an assault rifle to take matters into their own hands. That they should climb to the top of a building and start killing people? It is, of course, a despicable logo. Most people, conservative to liberal, get that. Just this month, an AK47 owner blasted 11 folks...

A newly discovered affliction has some doctors wondering if astronauts traveling to Mars could be blind by the time they got there.A new study of astronauts shows that radiation and bone loss aren't the only health risks for long-duration stays in space. About one-third of the U.S. space station crew members return with impaired vision, a condition in which at least one case was permanent. The data has been slow in coming since astronauts can be disqualified from flying if they have serious ailments. "These are guys who really don't like to complain about physical issues because it may...

And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. – I Chronicles 12:32 (KJV), (written as David was given the administration of the nation of Israel). In America, the elections of 2012 are a transition election. Our country is in a transition period. God knows what it is we are transitioning to. Time will tell. But, before we examine that, let’s step back a century and a half: In the America of...

A delegation of Democratic members of Congress met with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas yesterday and received a blunt message about his vision for the state he hopes to lead. If he gets the independent Palestinian he says he wants, it will have no Jewish settlements. This demand for an ethnically cleansed Palestine would mean the forced removal of all Jews living in the territories. Since he is calling for that state to exist in all of the territory of the West Bank, Gaza and the part of Jerusalem that was illegally occupied by Jordan from 1949 to 1967, that

When the orbiter Atlantis lands at Kennedy Space Center on Thursday, ending the 30-year-old space shuttle program, NASA will have its sights set on the next big exploration mission: sending astronauts to an asteroid in about 15 years. But the path to that goal remains poorly defined, jeopardized by a bleak budget outlook and a weak political consensus. It has left a deep angst that U.S. leadership in space flight is in rapid decline and the very ability to fly humans off the Earth is at risk. "I'm very disappointed about where we are today," said Robert L. Crippen, who...

Vision: I saw a "cut out" of the US, lying flat, "sandwiched" between two pieces of plastic wrap. The wrap was sealed at the ends. Then, I saw a forefinger lift the top layer of plastic wrap, breaking the seal at the edge in a small place. Over and over I saw that finger lift the edge of the top layer of plastic wrap at various places on the edges of the "cut out" of the US. Where the edge of the wrap was lifted, it left an opening between the layers. Those were places where the country was not...

NEW YORK (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Wednesday accused Republicans of using their cost-cutting proposals to push a vision of a "shrunken America" as he sought to rally supporters on a re-election fundraising drive in New York. At a trio of events aimed at rekindling the enthusiasm of his 2008 presidential campaign, Obama touted his economic policies and budget plan and urged Republicans to engage in a "serious debate" on tackling the nation's debt and deficits. But even as he tried to reconnect with his party's base, he acknowledged that many Americans remained frustrated by tough economic conditions and...

WASHINGTON — When President Obama emerged from spending talks last Thursday night, he went before cameras to insist that an agreement was needed to avoid a government shutdown that he warned would damage the country. What he did not do was make a public case for what should be in the agreement itself. During a week of budget brinkmanship, the president who signed the largest stimulus spending program in American history largely left it to his Senate allies to respond to the sharp clarity of the Republican austerity message rather than outline a clear vision of what the role of...

The recent quick fade of the Deficit Commission was the latest reminder that America no longer seems to have the stomach for big challenges. There was a time – was it just a generation ago? – when Americans were legendary for doing vast, seemingly superhuman, projects: the Interstate Highway System, the Apollo Missions, Hoover Dam, the Manhattan Project, the Normandy invasion, the Empire State Building, Social Security. What happened?

Corneas made in the laboratory have successfully restored the sight of 10 Swedish patients with significant vision loss.Produced entirely from synthetic collagen, the implants offer the tantalising possibility for a replacement to human donor tissues. The custom-made corneas work by prompting regeneration of the nerves and cells in the eye. This is the first time vision has been restored in this way. > The patients all recovered their sight as well as if they had received human donor corneas. In some respects, recovery of the eye was better than when compared to a human graft. "Nerve regeneration was faster in...

Son of the Republic, Look and Learn ~ A Vision of George Washington ~ "The Birth, the progress and the destiny of the United States" The father of our country, George Washington, was a man of prayer. Many of us have read of how he went to the thicket many times to pray during the winter his army was at Valley Forge. However, little publicity has been give to the vision and prophecy he received at that time. The account of this vision was given in 1859 by an old soldier. He gave it to a writer, Wesley Bradshaw, who...

Having problems seeing either at a distance or close up? Is the newsprint getting fuzzier, or is the computer screen more blurry than it used to be? It may be time for you to get to the optometrist or opthalmologist depending upon your vision condition. If you already are wearing some type of vision correction such as contact lenses or eyeglasses, maybe it's time to go back for a followup exam to find out if you need help...

Joe Paterno doesn't need glasses anymore. What will he get rid of next? The rolled-up pants? The Penn State football coach underwent eye surgery last month and said he no longer needs to wear his iconic, thick-lensed glasses. But Paterno, 83, told the Web site fightonstate.com Thursday that he had auxiliary pair made because he feels awkward without them

The Great Recession of 2008 and 2009 could be a turning point in history. It could be the event that shocks us into a new vision of ourselves, our past, our future, our mission, and our destiny. Or it could be the prelude to a long decline. Will that turning point be for better or for worse? Will it be a new beginning, a new opportunity to see what we've achieve with brand new eyes and to build on our foundations brilliantly? Or will it be the end? The beginning of the Chinese Century? The answer depends on something that...
