“We’re just going to pursue excellence … that’s how you win a space race and that’s just how you move our countries forward. More importantly, that’s how you create an environment where you might encourage others to collaborate,” Glover, 49, the mission pilot, said.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon: what a genius. He didn’t have AI, his ship had actual tinfoil covering it, but he managed to overcome adversity and land the craft manually when their first landing spot looked precarious to him. Back then, men were given IQ tests and chosen based on merit. I hope NASA still knows how to do that and I hope nothing goes wrong with Artemis.

No point in sending wetware to the moon. Send robots that are not living souls.

I would agree with you but there is that nasty time delay when getting data back and forth, so if there is a problem you need someone locally like Neil armstrong to take the controls, not to mention Americans could use some risk and adventure

“We’re just going to pursue excellence…”

In my entire adult life “we” have not pursued excellence, we have pursued leftist political imperatives.

When someone declares their virtue out of the gate it usually means the opposite of the claim being true.

my question to nasa is: where is the mexican guy from LA that overcame adversity and is thankful for the “opportunity?” Where is the chinaman?

Either way, the key is to make it as profitable as possible, as soon as possible.

I heard a presentation on cislunar telemetry last year and learned the delta-v to service a geosynchronous satellite is 1/4 the energy cost from the moon vs the surface of earth.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon: what a genius. He didn’t have AI, his ship had actual tinfoil covering it, but he managed to overcome adversity and land the craft manually (when the first integrated circuitry landing radar was overloaded and failed) when their first landing spot looked precarious to him. Back then, men were given IQ tests and chosen based on merit. I hope NASA still knows how to do that and I hope nothing goes wrong with Artemis.

Just added a little. You’re right though. Not just Armstrong. Gordy Cooper, all the people on Apollo 13, and one spectacular Russian who almost brought his ‘communist’ spaceship back Vladimir Komarav, after everything failed but him.

Yes, getting off earth is the key. We wring our hands worrying about dwindling resources while living in a universe with unlimited resources. Getting to them is the problem— for now

I thought NASA lost the technology to land on the moon.

No one and no Americans will be walking on the moon. These bush league astronauts will be sent to orbit the moon for about ten days. They will be sending down robot moon probes that will report back.

After these boring moon orbits they will plunge further into outer space, to set a record for humans venturing furthest from planet earth. This part will be glorified to obscure that they did not walk on the moon, to plant the American flag to claim the moon for the good ol’ US of A!

Definitely. I watched video of a SpaceX flight, and the commander sat motionless, in silence as computers and the team on earth flew the craft. That is all well and good until there is a problem. You can’t panic, your brain has to race along performing calculations and multi-tasking. You only have seconds to act

“… and wow, yeah, if we could get the whole world together for just a minute.””

Yep, a huge group hug will resolve all conflicts.

One has to wonder, does he actually believe that, and if he does, why?

“Back then, men were given IQ tests and chosen based on merit.”

Now it is based on skin color and genitalia.

When I was a kid, I was impressed by NASA. Now, I rank them right up there with the IRS and DMV

I disagree. This is a human experience.

You would have settled the West with robotics if you were alive in the 1800s and the machine were available. Where would we be now?

“I thought NASA lost the technology to land on the moon.”

They are going to fly to the moon and orbit for 10 days. NO MOONWALKS will be going on. At this rate I would not be surprised if China-CCP sends their goons on a moonwalk before we do.

I don’t have any confidence in these “men” to pilot these things like I had in Alan Shepard, Neil Armstrong, et al.
