Cracks form among Senate Democrats as Trump threatens big shutdown layoffs

Cracks are starting to form in the Senate Democratic caucus over whether to hold the line against a seven-week clean government funding stopgap passed by the House, according to Democratic sources who say a threat by President Trump to lay off thousands of federal workers is changing the Democratic political calculus on a shutdown.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), who faces a potential primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in 2028, has made it clear he won’t vote for the House-passed GOP stopgap, but centrists in his caucus are looking for a way to avoid a catastrophic shutdown.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who plans to retire from the Senate at the end of 2026, has been “putting out feelers” to Republican senators about reaching some sort of deal or mutual understanding to avoid a government shutdown next week, according to a source familiar with her conversations with Senate colleagues.

Shaheen told Semafor in an interview Wednesday that she sees “a number of ways” to avoid a government shutdown “that should satisfy both sides” and opened the door to voting for the House-passed stopgap next week when Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) brings it back to the Senate floor.

Let the communist shutdown of the government proceed...
One more weapon against the communists in the next midterms...

Perfect.

A Schumer shutdown will trigger permanent DOGE cuts. A fitting end to his ‘legacy’.

This may be his final chance to get rid of the rest of the bush/obama/biden holdovers thru layoffs.

Good cause Trump aint budging. He is NOT going to allow free health care for illegals, they can go home and get all the health care they want, NOT on our dime not anymore..and no more mutilating children for commies benefit. Trump wins either way, because if the Govt is shut down, he gets to fire EVERY FEDERAL WORKER he wants so its win/win

I have been very confused. We have a majority in the Senate. Just pass the resolution.

Schmucky has to appear tough to appease the nutjobs in his base. I believe that this is why he made unacceptable demands.

But allowing a shutdown hands Trump a metaphorical loaded gun.

Sigh.
We have a two vote majority in the senate.
It takes 60 votes in the senate to pass the bill.
Even being totally optimistic, we would still need democrat votes

To be honest, I’m surprised this anrtical isn’t about “cracks forming“ among Republicans.

Yes and no. Do we nuke the filibuster for everything here and now?
What’s the over under effect of that? Need 60 votes to overcome it currently IMHO.

If nothing else, get the fifty votes plus the VP and make the Democrats filibuster it. Make them hold the floor for every second the government is shut down. And furlough the Congressional staff so they get no help doing it. They get no food from the shut down cafeteria. Just standing on the Senate floor explaining to the country why the government must be shut down to give free health care to illegals.
