The American Veterinary Medicine Association is proposing removing the farrier exemption veterinary practice. It is unclear what this would mean but at worst, it would mean only a vet may shoe a horse, or a farrier may only do so under supervision or with a prescription from a vet. Clearly, this will add a cost to shoeing and may eliminate many shoers from the profession. It may require all farriers be certified. LONDON, Aug. 5 – British health inspectors combed two veterinary laboratories in southern England today after it was discovered that the strain of foot and mouth disease at a farm four miles away was the same as used in the production of vaccine at the facilities. The Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said the facilities, which house the government’s Institute of Animal Health and a private pharmaceutical company, Merial Animal Health, were a “possible” source of the virus, but a definitive conclusion had not been reached. TOKYO (June 13) - Japan will get its first nursing home for dogs with round-the-clock monitoring by doctors and a team of puppies to help aging pooches feel younger, a pet products company said Wednesday. Owners pay $800 a month to keep their dogs at the Soladi Care Home for pets, which opens Friday, according to a joint release by Soladi Co. and the Endo Veterinary clinic in Tochigi, eastern Japan. A Tufts University veterinary school student who cried foul about a canine research study found the school's dog-walking program abruptly shut down yesterday, apparently over concerns about animal-rights activists.
