KEY POINTS • Childhood verbal abuse (CVA) is currently categorized under the broad umbrella of “emotional abuse.” • Along with four other child maltreatment subtypes, CVA should be a stand-alone child maltreatment subtype. • Recognizing and defining specific types of CVA is a starting point for preventing it. • A recent systematic review and meta-analysis identifies at least 22 unique types of childhood verbal abuse. In my opinion, the list of unique types of verbal abuse omitted one important one: lying, or malicious untruthfulness to children. I'm thinking here of the spiteful ex-wives who destroy the father's reputation in the...

Conway responded that Trump is "not 'presidential' at all, period." "You're mentally unwell. You engage in bizarre, irrational, self-defeating behavior which prompts criticism of you, which triggers more bizarre, irrational, self-defeating behavior. You would have been fired from any other job by now," Conway said. Lawyer George Conway called President Trump out for a cycle of "bizarre, irrational, self-defeating" and overall not "presidential" behavior on Sunday. Conway, husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, is a frequent critic of...

A player on Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team has accused the head coach of being emotionally abusive and the university of silencing allegations. The university says it is investigating the claims. Taryn Taugher, the lone senior on NKU women's basketball team, wrote a post in The Odyssey alleging emotional abuse by head coach Camryn Whitaker. Taugher also alleges that Northern Kentucky University's athletic department is willing to "silence the multiple emotional abuse allegations." The Odyssey is similar to a blog site, where contributors publish content. It is popular with college students. In her post, Taugher alleges that she has...

'She's your worst nightmare as a neighbour but imagine living with the beast of Butt Lane'The terrifying tirades of Britain’s most nagging wife have been laid bare – in tapes released by her long-suffering neighbours. The recordings were compiled as evidence against domestic bully Julie Griffiths over 18 months, helping to secure her five-year Asbo. The 43-year-old subjected husband Norman to years of verbal abuse that could be heard clearly in the street. Her vile temper would flare up over anything – and two riot vans carrying 20 cops once raced over as neighbours feared for Norman’s life. Griffiths has...

Faced with rampant reports of sexual harassment and mistrust of the chain of command on the USS Germantown, Navy leaders turned to Cmdr. Jason Leach for help. Sailors applauded when Rear Adm. Hugh Wetherald, commander of the Amphibious Force Seventh Fleet, gave Leach command of the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship in May 2013, after the departure of the previous captain, Cmdr. Carol McKenzie, who could be so harsh that her behavior bordered on verbal abuse, according to a half-dozen sailors who served with both skippers. It turns out, he was the wrong man for the job, according to the...

YELLING at kids can cross line if personal By MARLON MANUEL The Atlanta Journal-Constitution All parents have disciplined by decibel at one time or another. More than 90 percent yell at their kids, threaten to spank them, swear at them, call them names or threaten to kick them out of the house, said family researcher Murray Straus, concluding what adults have known forever: "Children are frustrating." But there's a huge difference between verbal venting and verbal abuse. A DeKalb County grandmother crossed that line when she yelled vulgarities and threatened her 13-year-old granddaughter, and it landed her in jail. "Please,...

What you say to your children can break the law, as a DeKalb County woman learned when her tirade against her granddaughter was picked up on a tape-recorded phone call to a radio station. Venus Taylor, 55, pleaded guilty Monday to child cruelty, even though investigators found no evidence that she had physically abused her three grandchildren. DeKalb Assistant District Attorney Rachelle Carnesale, who has specialized in child abuse cases for nine years, said Taylor was the first defendant she had prosecuted only for verbal abuse. Taylor, who spent 19 days in jail after her arrest in November 2002, was...
