Progressive Christians Start O.C. ChapterBy Ann Pepper The Orange County Register A group of Orange County activists wants to recast the public voice of religion and base it on Christ's "radical" admonition to love your neighbor as yourself. This summer, hoping to attract believers who feel their faith has been hijacked by political interests, Progressive Christians Uniting, a 10-year-old Southern California-based organization, opened an Orange County chapter. <p>While Democrats urged one of their own to drop out of the recall election Friday, the list of Republican contenders grew as former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth announced his candidacy a day before the filing deadline.</p> <p>Ueberroth, who successfully organized the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, said that although he is a registered Republican, he will run an independent campaign.
