[history]
While Democrats urged one of their own to drop out of the recall election Friday, the list of Republican contenders grew as former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth announced his candidacy a day before the filing deadline.
Ueberroth, who successfully organized the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, said that although he is a registered Republican, he will run an independent campaign. He pledged to serve only the remainder of Democratic Gov. Gray Davis' term.

This is a much bigger deal than what we see in California, according to what I heard last night on Capitol Report. Without a Democrat as Governor of California with the electoral votes we have , they will have enormous difficulties beating President Bush in 2004!
Expect some heavy weight pressure and clout to be applied to get the Democratic side of the ballot the way they want it!
They still are looking to the Federal Courts for help also!

Amazingly enough, lil Emperor Willie Brown hasn't jumped in yet... and Moonbeam has his hands full with Oakland, he was another one I thought might go for it.
Leon Panetta has about as much appeal as a limp zucchini to most of the electorate.
Hell, I'd let Peter Uebberth run this state before most folks running.
It's gonna be a heckuva election run, for sure. Too bad the media will be pushing their elitist agendas and not the people's ... ;-)

Not knowing what the heck is really happening I will ask..........Is Grey Davis now toast ? Can he get on the ballot and be re-elected ? Is this the death of his squalid little term as Socialist King of Kali ?

"Without a Democrat as Governor of California with the electoral votes we have , they will have enormous difficulties beating President Bush in 2004!" That's wishful thinking. With or without a Dumbocrap as Governor, their illegal vote manufacturing machine will be in good working order.

How many people remember Leon Panetta is a former Republican?
To: Squantos
"Is Gr[a]y Davis now toast ?" He went 0-5 in the California Supreme Court yesterday, and had a bad week overall. If he's not already toast, he's at least lightly browned.
"Can he get on the ballot and be re-elected ?"
He will be on the ballot, but only in Part I ... "Shall Gray Davis, Governor of California, be recalled from office?" The California Election Codes, upheld by the CA Supreme Court yesterday, prevents any officer liable for recall, from running as their own replacement.

"Democrats try to support Davis while uniting behind alternative candidate." Ha ha. This like my attending a party and telling my wife, "Honey, we're of course going home together, but I'm flirting with this 21-year old babe just in case the unthinkable happens and, against my better wishes, I just have to go home with her."
