Employees at Nitehawk Cinema in Prospect Park say they’ve had enough of unsafe working conditions, unfair treatment, and being underpaid and overworked at the popular theater. Dartmouth University’s men’s basketball team voted to unionize on Tuesday, bringing them one step closer to becoming the first collegiate labor union. The whole team participated in a 13-2 vote in favor of joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 560. The school will have until March 12 to file an objection to the union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law on Friday that allows county workers across the state to collectively bargain. Senate Bill 22-230 was introduced by Democrats in April and given final passage on May 11, the last day of the 2022 legislative session. The House on Tuesday approved a resolution that allows staffers in the lower chamber to unionize. The resolution, which passed along party lines in a 217-202 vote, officially gives House staffers the legal protection to unionize and take part in collective bargaining. Three Democrats and seven Republicans did not vote.Rather than as a standalone measure, the resolution passed as part of a rule that also pertained to a number of other measures.

Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered a vote among home-based child care providers about whether they should unionize. His executive order issued Tuesday sets an election for December. It affects thousands of self-employed providers. The state Bureau of Mediation Services will oversee the election. Dayton says if a union is authorized during the vote, membership would be voluntary. Dayton's decision furthers an already politically charged debate over union rights.
