KERRY'S CHRISTMAS IN CAMBODIA [08/06 11:39 AM] This is from Unfit for Command, the new book by John O'Neill, the man who took over John Kerry's Swift Boat, and co-author Jerome Corsi: Kerry also described, for example, for the Boston Herald his vivid memories of his Christmas Eve spent in Cambodia: "I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American...

The focus on the Swift Boat story is not where it should be (though the KerrySpot is working hard to get it where it needs to be.) The first question is does the book Unfit for Command contain new and credible information, and if so, what aspects of John Kerry's qualifications to be president does that information inform? The super-charged debate on the ad and the first Purple Heart are exactly the wrong places to begin the investigation. Journalists ought to instead ask "What's new in the book that is susceptible of being proven true or false, leading to increases...

A group of Vietnam veterans launched an assault on Senator John Kerry's war record yesterday as the fight for the presidency turned ugly. Thirteen men from the naval patrol squadron in which Mr Kerry served, calling themselves "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth", appeared in a television advertisement accusing him of claiming falsely to be a hero. They said he lied to win his gallantry medals and alleged that he committed abuses against civilians in the Mekong Delta. Mr Kerry's campaign team retorted that none of the veterans had served in Mr Kerry's patrol boats. Mr Kerry has faced criticism for...

[snip]Kerry's commander, Grant Hibbard, is quoted as saying that Kerry came to see him the next day to seek a Purple Heart, but "I told Kerry to 'forget it.' " Asked how Kerry got a Purple Heart, Hibbard replied, "It beats me." Later that month, was ordered to more dangerous duty on inland waterways at a place called An Thoi but fellow Swift Boat veterans say he loudly bellyached until he got transferred out within a week, showing that he had "very little nerve for facing serious combat." The book quotes fellow Swiftee William Franke as saying Kerry complained that...

Authors of a new book criticizing John Kerry's service in Vietnam write the Democrat took no enemy fire on the night he sustained a slight injury for which he received a Purple Heart, an injury he caused himself by firing a grenade launcher at too close a range. In "Unfit for Command," scheduled for release Aug. 15, John O'Neill, who took over Kerry's swift-boat command, and co-author Jerome Corsi explain the scratch was caused by Kerry's firing an M-79 grenade launcher too close, "causing a tiny piece of shrapnel (one to two centimeters) to barely stick in his arm." They...

John Kerry was awarded his Silver Star in Vietnam "by killing a lone, fleeing, teenage Viet Cong in a loincloth," according to a blockbuster book by the presidential candidate's former Navy colleagues, scheduled for release next week. "Unfit for Command," which has reached No. 1 on the Amazon.com best-seller list, says "if Kerry's superiors had known the truth at the time, they would never have recommended him for the medal," according to the Drudge Report. The book, by an officer who took over Kerry's swift-boat command, John O'Neill, also claims Kerry burned down a village after ordering the slaughter of...

Elliott said he was no under personal or political pressure to sign the statement, but he did feel ''time pressure" from those involved in the book. ''That's no excuse," Elliott said. ''I knew it was wrong . . . In a hurry I signed it and faxed it back. That was a mistake." The affidavit also contradicted earlier statements by Elliott, who came to Boston during Kerry's 1996 Senate campaign to defend Kerry on similar charges, saying that Kerry acted properly and deserved the Silver Star. The book, ''Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," is...

Human Events reports that the DNC and the Kerry campaign are writing to television stations, stating that the Swift Boat ads is is "false" and "libelous" and that "your station may not responsibly air this advertisement." At least one of their points in the letter is an obvious lie: "The advertisement contains statements by men who purport to have served on Senator John Kerry's SWIFT [sic] boat in Vietnam and one statement by a man pretending to be the doctor who treated Senator Kerry for one of his injuries." Horsepucky. Every vet in the ad says, "I served with John...

Christmas In “Cambodia” Vietnam, December 1968JOHN KERRY’S STORY If there is one story told over and over again by John Kerry since his return from Vietnam, it is the heart-wrenching tale of how he spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day illegally in Cambodia. From the early 1970s, when he used the tale as part of his proof for war crimes in Cambodia, through the mid-1980s and the 1990s, Kerry has spoken and written again and again of how he was illegally ordered to enter Cambodia. On the floor of the U.S. Senate on March 27, 1986, Kerry launched one of...

Don't look now, but the Kerry campaign is about to start attacking a group of Vietnam War veterans. After making Kerry's service as a swift-boat captain a cornerstone of the Democratic National Convention last week, the campaign's new goal will be to discredit some of Kerry's fellow soldiers as (shudder) politically motivated. Specifically, the trouble comes in the form of a band of veterans who served with Kerry during his glory tour in Vietnam and who will publish a book of their own memories of the young skipper called "Unfit for Command" in coming weeks. As a chronicle and anticipated...

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has posted a photo on its Web site, www.swiftvets.com, that shows just how little support Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry has among swift boat officers who knew him in Vietnam. Twenty officers, including Mr. Kerry, are shown in the photo, but the Web site urges viewers to touch it with their cursor to see just how many support the Massachusetts Democrat's White House bid. Suddenly, only one man is standing near Mr. Kerry.
