India accuses EU and US of ‘indulging’ in trade with Russia
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | August 5th, 2025 | Tim Wallace

India has accused the EU and US of “indulging” in trade with Russia after Donald Trump criticised New Delhi for propping up Vladimir Putin’s war machine by buying its oil.

The country’s foreign ministry said it was forced to buy “predictable and affordable” Russian oil after other supplies were diverted to Europe after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

It comes after the US president threatened to “substantially raise” tariffs on India, adding the country was buying discounted Russian oil and “selling it on the open market for big profits.”

India called the attack “unjustified and unreasonable” in a statement, arguing that its dealings with Russia were “a necessity” for the country’s economic prospects.

It added: “It is revealing that the very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion.”

While Brussels has vowed to wean itself off Russian oil by 2027, it still imported €22.3bn (£19.3bn) worth of fossil fuels in 2024, with Moscow its third largest trading partner.

India said the EU’s trade with Russia, at €67.5bn (£58.6bn) of goods last year, “is significantly more” than India’s total trade with Russia, which stood at £51.7bn in the financial year ending in April.

India illustrates POTUS's hypocrisy.

While the largest importer of Russian oil, China, remains unchallenged. And Turkey.

Especially the EU countries.

Counties are free to trade with whom they want I don’t see how that’s hypocritical. America wants to tariff india ? They are free to do that . India sure tariffs us
If india wants to buy Russian oil they are free to do that . Just like America is free to add more tariffs on them
Hopefully the war ends soon and we can get past this.

India is right. Trump is singling out India for a tariff he also should be putting on China for its Russian oil imports (about 2.17 million barrels a day), but he wants to “make a deal” with China and being honest with China about Russian oil would kill any deal; China has let Trump know that.

Diplomacy thy real name is duplicity.

India has a point.

But, the oil purchases by Europe was forced on them by the Biden administration cutting oil production. And the purchase from Russia were decided before the invasion of Ukraine. The EU can now stop the purchase of Russian oil if the U.S. can replace it; so should India.

So the world’s largest oil producer is telling India that it can’t buy oil from another major oil producer?

Isn’t this how an organized crime racket operates?

India has a point.
The US (Saudis would no doubt support) increase oil production to supply both Europe and India. (China is a separate issue.)

Individuals and corporations in both the US and Europe still trade vodka and hundreds of other things with Russia...business as usual.

---- "India illustrates POTUS's hypocrisy. While the largest importer of Russian oil, China, remains unchallenged. And Turkey. Especially the EU countries."

This is a media shell game as well as a political circus about theats of sanctions and tariffs. The EU is going to continue to buy Russian energy for at least another 2 & 1/2 years, as is detailed below:

"The EU will gradually and effectively stop the import of Russian gas and oil by the end of 2027, under a legislative proposal put forward by the European Commission today. "

Commission proposes gradual phase-out of Russian gas and oil imports into the EU European Commisson, 16 June 2025.

More sources....

EU Proposes Ban on Russian Oil, Gas Imports by End 2027 Wall Street Journal, 17 June 2025.

EU plans gradual end to Russian gas and oil imports by 2027 Financial World, 17 June 2025.

EU proposes complete ban on Russian gas and oil imports by end of 2027 World ECR from Dow Jones, 19 June 2025.

EU sets 2027 as deadline to phase out all Russian energy Euro News, 6 May 2025.

EU proposes keeping gas storage filling goals until 2027 Reuters, 5 May 2025.

EU plans to stop Russian gas and oil imports by 2027 Yahoo Finance, 18 June 2025.

One notes subsequent media coverage about this has ceased now. Manipulating the public is ongoing,. If India simply responded by saying 'we will follow the EU example, and buy Russian energy products until the end of 2027,' the whole charade would wither.

Here’s a suggestion. Upon starting the conversation, Trump should congratulate India’s very narrow (6 runs) victory in this week’s England vs India test cricket match. Can’t hurt.

No, the “close enough” enemy is not a “perfect” situation, and given the ways of the CCP may be the most imperfect enemy, using that “close enough” for its own sinister ends against us.

Not so much hypocrisy as realism.

India has been laundering Russian oil and re selling the oil on the world markets for a profit to skirt sanctions on Russia. They also have serious trade barriers to American goods so this shot across their bow is a twofer for the Trump team.

The two biggest sanctions targets are France and China who have been two of the major obstacles to Trump's peace initiatives.

Trump needs to act to maintain credibility and India is low hanging fruit that gives the Trump team time to get their programs in place if they need to as well as giving more time for negotiations with Russia to take place.

One thing for sure is that the Ukraine is running out of time, money and weapons

I remain optimistic that there will be a resolution in the near future but we live in a crazy world.

India isn’t going to stop importing Russian oil. The best Trump can hope for is that India quit reselling Russian oil for profit on the black market. There’s no excuse for that.

“The EU can now stop the purchase of Russian oil”

Will they also stop the purchase of Indian distillates derived from Russian oil? Another $19.2 billion of Russian fuel.

Realism wouldn’t have us involved in this matter at all.

I was listening to some Youtube chatter and they were saying the real purpose of Trump’s Kabuki with respect to India (first 500% , then 25% and now an unspecified amount) is to get India to dump Russia as their advanced weapons supplier and sign a deal with the US. I don’t know if that’s true but we will see.
