    Boston Globe ^ | June 26, 2020 | Matina Stevis-Gridneff
The European Union will bar most travelers from the United States, Russia and dozens of other countries considered too risky because they have not controlled the coronavirus outbreak, EU officials said Friday. By contrast, travelers from more than a dozen countries that are not overwhelmed by the coronavirus will be welcomed when the bloc reopens after months of lockdown Wednesday. The acceptable countries also include China — but only if China allows EU travelers to visit as well, the officials said.

Going to Nashville TN (first time staying in TN) on a business conference/personal vacation. Any must see tourist items? Restaurants? Tips, Avoidances? Going there 9/22 and leaving for home on 9/29. The biz part is pretty much scheduled with it's own agenda on Wed-Fri. After that it is free wheeling.

The U.S. Travel Association is encouraging the Trump administration to turbocharge the reopening of the travel economy by creating a temporary travel tax credit. “To reduce the time it takes to get to full recovery, Congress should create a new tax credit to encourage domestic business and leisure travelers to travel within a specified time frame, similar to what was done through the homebuyer tax credit in the wake of the housing crisis,” U.S. Travel said in a legislative priorities document. President Trump mentioned the idea in May during a White House roundtable with restaurant industry executives, calling the creation...

I need help from the Freeper family for cross country travel advice during the Covid re-opening, to drive from California to the southeast and scout out locations for a new place to live. I am asking Freepers for information regarding travel restrictions and accomodations in various states, at and to my destinations. - Questions 1. Are hotels open for business in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennesee? 2. Are masks and face coverings mandatory in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee? 3. Are apartment managers allowing visitors to physically see units in their apartment complexes, or is everything still...

The White House on Sunday announced that the U.S. would bar entry of non-citizens traveling from Brazil, which has seen a sharp rise in coronavirus cases in previous weeks. The Trump administration “has determined that the Federative Republic of Brazil is experiencing widespread, ongoing person-to-person transmission” of the virus, according to a White House statement. Brazil reported over 347,000 COVID-19 cases as of Friday, second behind the U.S. in the number of infections, according to a Johns Hopkins University count. Brazil also has recorded over 22,000 deaths, which would make it the fifth-most in the world. There have been more...

I was just listening to Lou Dobbs on Fox Business News with my wife, and apparently the US has been allowing international air travel from *non-citizens* for quite some time. Including from China. I didn't stick around for the rest of the details, figuring I would toss something at the TV.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker for the first time acknowledged his wife and daughter were in Florida before Illinois’ statewide stay-at-home order took effect in March and just recently returned to Chicago. He was being “very private and very reserved because there are threats to my safety and to their safety." “You have seen that there are people that stand outside the Thompson Center and stand outside the Capitol in Springfield, holding, I mean, hateful signs that reference me personally and that suggest, if not say, but suggest the potential for violence." "If his family can’t even heed the guidance of his...

Carnival Cruise Line announced it plans to resume some North American sailings starting Aug. 1. The return to service will take a "phased-in approach," according to the company, focusing on eight ships from three homeports in Texas and Florida. Carnival also said any resumption of cruise operations "is fully dependent" on cooperation with federal, state, local and international government officials.

In the video, Pompeii Archaeological Park Director Massimo Osanna narrates a tour of two Pompeiian homes that were entombed in ash alongside the rest of the city when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The director's Italian remarks are translated into English in a statement and can also be read using YouTube's auto-translate feature, according to HeritageDaily. Osanna takes viewers inside two domus dwellings, or private residences, on either side of Vicolo dei Balconi, or Alley of the Balconies. In the first home, dubbed the House With the Garden, researchers were able to make casts of the roots of plants...

An ABC News joint investigation with its owned television stations sheds new light on the likely flow of the coronavirus from global hotspots into the U.S. and provides a glimpse the toll the virus has taken on some of the first Americans to interact with international travelers: airport workers. From December 2019 through March 2020, as severe outbreaks cropped up in China and then Italy and Spain, among others, thousands of flights from the hard-hit nations poured into U.S. cities, according to an ABC News analysis of more than 20 million flight records obtained from the tracking service Flightradar-24. While...

Thousands of Chinese travellers rushed to leave coronavirus-ravaged Wuhan early Wednesday as authorities lifted a more than two-month prohibition on outbound travel from the city where the global pandemic first emerged. As the ban expired on schedule at midnight (1600 GMT Tuesday), passengers -- many in hazmat suits -- expressed joy and relief as they filed into Wuhan's Wuchang station to catch the first overnight trains out of town. "Wuhan has lost a lot in this epidemic, and Wuhan people have paid a big price," said a 21-year-old man surnamed Yao, who was heading back to his restaurant job in...

There were 1,300 direct flights to 17 cities before President Trump’s travel restrictions. Since then, nearly 40,000 Americans and other authorized travelers have made the trip, some this past week and many with spotty screening. Since Chinese officials disclosed the outbreak of a mysterious pneumonialike illness to international health officials on New Year’s Eve, at least 430,000 people have arrived in the United States on direct flights from China, including nearly 40,000 in the two months after President Trump imposed restrictions on such travel, according to an analysis of data collected in both countries. The bulk of the passengers, who were...

Former Vice President Joe Biden reversed course, again, Friday afternoon. The presumptive Democratic nominee to face President Trump in November now says that he supports the president’s travel ban to and from China. This is a 180-degree spin from the former vice president. Just two months ago, Biden called a ban on travel to and from China, where the virus originated, was "xenophobic" and "racist:" "The national emergency and worldwide alerts. The American people need to have a president who they can trust what he says about it. That he is going to act rationally about it. In moments like...

An ABC News investigation offers sobering insight into how COVID-19 has spread and penetrated so broadly, so deeply and so quickly in the United States. Travel data of passengers arriving in the United States from China during the critical period in December, January and February, when the disease took hold in that country, shows a stunning 759,493 people entered the U.S. "This is an astonishing number in a short period of time, illustrating how globalized our world has become. Just as people can hop continents with amazing ease, the infections they carry can too," said Dr. Vinayak Kumar, an internal...

China announced Thursday it would temporarily restrict most foreigners from entering the country to prevent further spread of the coronavirus. The measures go into effect Saturday, March 28, with no given end date, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry. The country will not allow foreigners to enter even if they hold valid visas or temporary residence permits, including Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation cards. The policy includes short-term visa holders and foreign tour groups from Hong Kong, Macao, Hainan and Shanghai as well as Association of Southeast Asian Nations tourist groups. Foreigners seeking to engage in important business, trade,...
  • We’re the directors of Alaska’s emergency rooms. It’s time to shut down nonessential air travel

We believe the time to shut down any non-essential out-of-state travel is now. We also believe restrictions on in-state travel, especially to remote communities, should be considered. In the past few days, Alaska has started to see multiple positive tests for coronavirus. All were related to out-of-state travel. Most were related to travel to the Lower 48. With a large influx of state residents returning from spring break, we will see many more positive tests in the next week, and soon — if not already — experience significant community spread. The state of Alaska has taken appropriate measures, closing bars,...
