There were 1,300 direct flights to 17 cities before President Trumps travel restrictions. Since then, nearly 40,000 Americans and other authorized travelers have made the trip, some this past week and many with spotty screening.
Since Chinese officials disclosed the outbreak of a mysterious pneumonialike illness to international health officials on New Years Eve, at least 430,000 people have arrived in the United States on direct flights from China, including nearly 40,000 in the two months after President Trump imposed restrictions on such travel, according to an analysis of data collected in both countries.
The bulk of the passengers, who were of multiple nationalities, arrived in January, at airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Newark and Detroit. Thousands of them flew directly from Wuhan, the center of the coronavirus outbreak, as American public health officials were only beginning to assess the risks to the United States.
Flights continued this past week, the data show, with passengers traveling from Beijing to Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, under rules that exempt Americans and some others from the clampdown that took effect on Feb. 2. In all, 279 flights from China have arrived in the United States since then, and screening procedures have been uneven, interviews show.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly suggested that his travel measures impeded the viruss spread in the United States. I do think we were very early, but I also think that we were very smart, because we stopped China, he said at a briefing on Tuesday, adding, That was probably the biggest decision we made so far. Last month, he said, Were the ones that kept China out of here.

Nice how they twist a good thing done by "President" Trump, not Mr, into a bad thing.
Yup, started reading, then saw “Trump”. Stopped.
Trump + NYT = fake news
Were they Americans returning?
They must be coming to MA because the outbreak here is about to explode.
The NYT blows a lot of smoke, but if this information is evenly remotely true it is extremely disappointing. We must have better control of all points of entry.
Sure, I believe the NY Times on this.
I HADN’T noticed until you pointed it out. It’s subtle and VERY nasty.
Yes, there are no restrictions for Americans returning from China.
The first reference is to President Trump. This has been NYT style forever.
It FIVE authors to make this particular hit piece. These are the people who called Trump a racist for invoking the travel ban.
According to data from the chicoms. Full stop. Article is BS.
Yeah, its really hard to believe Trump wasn’t at the Gates of these airports personally checking on these disease filled folks.
And you know the checking of these people was “uneven”. We know this to be true because it is in the NY Slimes.
Been happening since he became President, reporters referring to him as Trump or Mr. Trump.
The more the authors, the deeper the bias and the more complex the lies.
There also seem to be an unconventionally high number of Chinese who are now US citizens, but return to China annually. Sort of makes it appear as they aren’t as devoted to the US as to China.
95% of Americans approve of Trump banning China travel. At the time, Joe Biden and most Dems criticized Trump.... So this is clearly NYT attempting to take down Trumps strongest action/issue.
Trump cut the rate from 15,000 to 1,000 per day by only allowing Chinese-based airlines to come here.
But still, 1000 is NOT zero. And then North Italy - they flew in here and, maybe, filled out a form. That was it...while the virus RAGED in that area.
I’d love to defend Trump, but like his support for DACA, I’m not with him on listening to what the Globalists want.
Well, plenty of Americans went back home from China when the situation escalated. That explains a good deal of the total number.
There is no doubt in my mind China decided they were not going to suffer alone.
