An Australian runner found an unpleasant surprise while running on Monday near his home in New South Wales. Paul Roberts, 42, was doing run-walk intervals at Lake Macquarie State Conservation Park. when he saw what looked like a man-made pile of leaves along the trail. Though not heavily populated, the trail does get foot and bike traffic, which is why Roberts was shocked when he kicked off the top of the leaves and found wine corks with nails through them. These are similar to historic weapons known as caltrops. At first, Roberts said he didn’t think much of his initial...

Since when is the law supposed to be fungible? Even better — from a certain point-of-view — than a radar trap based on an under-posted speed limit is a radar trap with a changing speed limit. One that can be dumbed-down at random and with no prior notice, at the whim of the same government workers who enforce the limits and profit from that enforcement. It’s called Variable Speed Limits and the Feds — through the Department of Transportation — are not only encouraging the states to adopt them, they are bribing them to adopt them. Cue Dr. Evil voice...

A ruthless Mexican girl gang is accused of using their prettiest member to lure men to secluded spots where a female body builder would put him in a headlock so the others could beat him up and rob him. Mexican police arrested the gang of six women who they suspect targeted dozens of men, many of whom were thought to have been too ashamed to report the matter to police. The gang, operating in the popular tourist city Cancun in the southeast Mexican state of Quintana Roo, used attractive Maria Sierra, 20, who targeted single men or at the most...

Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell arrived in Israel for his second visit. Whereas Mitchell's last visit - which took place in the last days of the electoral campaign -- was touted as a "listening tour," Mitchell made clear that during his current stay, he intends to begin calling shots. His first order of business, we are told, is to pressure the outgoing government to destroy the so-called outpost communities in Judea and Samaria and expel the hundreds of Israeli families who live in them. To defend this call for intra-Israeli instability and violence, Mitchell notes that Prime Minister...

Cruelty to animals? A waste of time and money? A project to get rid of some pesky birds beneath bridges is being met with serious questions. The motivating factor behind the project is avian excrement - otherwise known as poop. Tucked beneath 14 North Texas tollway bridges, you'll find cages baited with corn, waiting for pigeons to step inside. The tollway says trapping them is necessary to cut down on bird droppings hazardous to the highway and people's health. But Teri Latsko and Nicole Matocha say the threat is to the birds. And they have the pictures to prove it....

Connect the dots: 1) Heard about a new (small) eruption of Piton de la Fournaise. 2) Piton de la Fournaise is the current "expression" of the La Reunion mantle plume. 3) Thought about what happened when the Indian subcontinent passed over the La Reunion plume = Deccan Traps volcanism. 4) Tried to find a good picture of the Deccan Traps. 5) Discovered that one of the few places to see Deccan Trap basalt layering is Lonar Crater. 6) Lonar Crater is said to be the only impact crater on volcanic basalt. 7) Found remote sensing and surface pictures of Lonar...

Satan’s Snares By Darren Morrison Living the Christian life we must walk carefully and always be alert for the snares of the Devil. Satan knows he cannot take our salvation, that is secured, but he can wreck our testimony. Being a Christian takes work. We cannot sit and do nothing; it takes effort to avoid the snares. A snare is a trap with a lure. Luke 21:34. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. 35. For as...

Police Seek Camera Shooter LONDON (Reuters) - Police hunted for a marksman with a grudge on Monday after two roadside speed cameras were shot to pieces in rural east England. Norfolk police said a sniper, probably armed with a high-powered air rifle, riddled the cameras with pellets causing 70,000 pounds ($111,000) worth of damage. The attacks happened days before a number of newly installed cameras were set to go live at accident black spots in the area. "You often have to worry about the mentality of people who do this sort of thing," Bryan Edwards, spokesman for the Norfolk Casualty...

Part 1: Faith and Works One of the basic arguments raised by non-Muslims, especially Christians, against Islam concerns the concept of salvation. They say that in Christianity, one is saved by faith, whereas in Islam one must earn their salvation through good deeds. Unfortunately, many Muslims fall into the trap of defending the position imposed on them by these non-Muslims. This then provides the Christians with a basis for their entire Jesus-Father-Crucifixion-Salvation framework. They then go on to argue that salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned. But if the true Islamic concept is made clear, the...

BETHLEHEM: US experts searching the Church of the Nativity yesterday found "booby traps" in the compound, an Israeli army spokesman said. He was unable to specify how many there were, or where they had been placed, but said that after the discovery the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, who has partial custody of the church, had asked Israeli troops to search the buildings. About 20 soldiers entered the church complex to check whether there were any remaining explosives. An army spokeswoman said the searches had found five concealed rifles and about 40 explosive devices, primed for use. Almost immediately, the Palestinian leadership...
