Windsor on Monday joined the growing number of municipalities which have voted to end the decades-old practice of adding fluoride to the water supply in the fight against tooth decay. “A lot has changed in the last 60 years … fluoride is not the be-all and end-all to prevent tooth decay,” said Mayor Eddie Francis, who voted with the majority.… “I want to be shown that when we ingest this, we are safe,” said Kimberley DeYong of Fluoride Free Windsor. She and others said not a single study among those cited by fluoridation proponents looked specifically at the industry-sourced chemical...

Hormone-producing gland can be created from (mouse) embryonic stem cells. A series of achievements have stoked excitement about the potential of regenerative medicine, which aims to tackle diseases by replacing or regenerating damaged cells, tissues and organs. A paper in Nature today1 reports another step towards this goal: the generation of working thyroid cells from stem cells. Sabine Costagliola, a molecular embryologist at the Free University of Brussels, and her team study the development of the thyroid gland, which regulates how the body uses energy and affects sensitivity to other hormones. Their research shows that thyroid function can be re-established...

Aug 20 (Reuters) - People who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as children continue to have a higher-than-normal risk of thyroid cancer more than 50 years after radiation exposure, according to a U.S. study. Thyroid cells are particularly vulnerable to ionizing radiation, the kind produced by the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown or the atomic bombings in Japan. The study published in the International Journal of Cancer tracked new cancer diagnoses in people who were in Japan during the bombings in 1945 and those who were not. In total, there were 371 thyroid cancers diagnosed between 1958 and 2005...

The Nuclear Safety Commission headed by Haruki "Detarame" Madarame disclosed on July 4 that the test conducted in late March had found 45% of 1,080 children tested in Fukushima Prefecture had internal radiation exposure at thyroid gland, according to Tokyo Shinbun. 3 months, that seems to be the amount of time that these government people must feel safe to disclose what they had known all along. After 3 months, people may forget, and/or people will give up because the disclosure is too late. The NSC says the levels were low, and there was no need for more detailed evaluation. If...

There's alot of confusion about taking iodine to ward off radiation poisoning. Dr. Brownstein is an expert in iodine/iodide usage and has written a blog specifically for the radiation. Inorganic, non radiated iodine does not cause allergies. Most symptoms that people may connect to iodine and assume they are allergic are actually bromine detox symptoms. Whether we're faced with radiation coming to this country or not, we should all take iodine for health. Deficiency in iodine is known to cause breast cancer, fibroids, thyroid cancer, ovarian and prostate cancer.

Dear Freepers, I've never asked for prayers on FR, but I have to now. Would you please pray for my youngest daughter, who's 19? I am in tears because she was just diagnosed with a large nodule on her thyroid. I had mine removed to papillary cancer in '06, and I'm praying and hoping that she doesn't have to have hers removed as well. It tends to run in my family, my grandmother had hers removed too. She is a strong young woman, in college, and is a blessing to our family. She is scared for a variety of reasons...

Scientists have linked exposure to small levels of a chemical found in public drinking water supplies in 26 states to suppressed thyroid function in more than a third of women and girls 12 and older.     The exposure to perchlorate, a study showed, was most acute in women with low levels of iodine in their systems, said Dr. James L. Pirkle, director of sciences in the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's Environmental Health laboratory and the study's author.     "It's already been known that high levels of exposure to perchlorate [reduce] thyroid function, but this large study of more...

Asking for the prayers for my wife (Anita) who is going in for a fine needle biopsy of her thyroid today. Her doctor found a lump in her throat during her annual physical exam and has done a couple of scans in which they found nodules on her thyroid. Seems when it rains it pours, I'm just now recovering from my chemotherapy and finally getting my hair back when she had her exam.
  • Sunscreen chemicals disrupt thyroid in rats - may be dangerous for people with thyroid problems

Sunscreen chemicals disrupt thyroid in rats Chemicals found in many sunscreens can disrupt the production of thyroid hormone in rats, researchers report. Their study raises concerns that chemicals that absorb ultraviolet light could damage the thyroid in people. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and secretes hormones that affect growth and metabolism. UV light from the Sun can potentially cause skin cancer. But studies on the chemicals that block UV have already raised concerns over side effects. In 2001 Swiss researchers reported that 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC), among other sunscreen chemicals, mimicks the reproductive hormone oestrogen and accelerates the...

Fitness guru Richard Simmons, who has been offering guidance to the out-of-shape masses on his Sirius Satellite radio program of late, reveals, "Now we're going to turn it into a television show. Right now everyone is offering me certain things, but I know the show I want to do." As in his radio gig, he'll respond to people who write to him about their weight -- and life -- problems. Simmons' ebullience is on hold when he soberly discusses the epidemic of obesity in America. "Bottom line, I think, is the fact that people have low self-worth right now. People...

I found out today I have to have my thyroid removed (cancer - but treatable). I'm kind of freaked out as I have always been an active, athletic and thin woman. The doctor assured me I could still be active without a thyroid. But I could use some additional assurance - as in, can I run a marathon? Am I going to wake up and weigh 300 lbs? Seriously, I'm too young to become a couch potato. Any Freepers with some experience here? I'm always amazed at what I can learn on this site. Thanks! Meowmeow

A joint US-Israeli research project has discovered that the drug L-thyroxin, most commonly used for the treatment of an underactive thyroid, can halve the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Scientists from the two countries announced at the current meeting of the American Association Cancer Research - Prevention Branch in Baltimore. "The effect was pretty dramatic," Professor Gad Rennert of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion Institute of Science, the head of the team, said at the conference. However, he added, "we have yet to understand the mechanisms. The literature on the subject is very minimal, but the finding...

A medical study says the incidence of thyroid cancer in New Caledonia is the highest in the world. The study published in the Medical Bulletin of New Caledonia and French Polynesia says the rate is 17 times higher than the global average for women, and eight times higher for men. The study has failed to establish a reason why New Caledonia’s rates are so high, while detailing that Kanaks are three times more likely to get thyroid cancer than people of European descent. A link has been established between such cancers and exposure to radiation but looking at figures from...

I was diagnosed just last week with thyroid problems, given beta blockers until testing could be done to find out the correct treatment for me. I went in because of severe trembling in my hands, although I have had many other symptoms for a long time. Monday night I became very light headed and was having heart palpitations. I went to the ER, and my BP was extremly high, my heart was in sinus tacacardia, and my pulse rate was 108. the nurses almost cheered when the rate went to 98. I was admitted with the diagnosis of a "thyroid...

Rehnquist, 80 and the second-oldest man to preside over the nation's highest court, is undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer, officials announced Monday. Rehnquist underwent a tracheotomy at Bethesda Naval Hospital in suburban Maryland on Saturday, the court's announcement said. It added he expects to be back at work next week when the court will next be in session. Even so, Rehnquist's hospitalization little more than a week before the election gave new prominence to a campaign issue that has been overshadowed by the war on terrorism. The next president is likely to...
