Radiation at Thyroid Gland found in 45% of 1000 Children Tested in Fukushima (tested in March)

The Nuclear Safety Commission headed by Haruki "Detarame" Madarame disclosed on July 4 that the test conducted in late March had found 45% of 1,080 children tested in Fukushima Prefecture had internal radiation exposure at thyroid gland, according to Tokyo Shinbun.

3 months, that seems to be the amount of time that these government people must feel safe to disclose what they had known all along. After 3 months, people may forget, and/or people will give up because the disclosure is too late.

The NSC says the levels were low, and there was no need for more detailed evaluation.

If you look at the numbers, though, you may wonder how they came to the conclusion. To them, 100 millisieverts per year body dose equivalent for 1 year old (or 0.2 microsievert/hour) was acceptable because the ICRP says so. Since the highest they found was 50 millisieverts per year body dose equivalent, they concluded there was no need for further testing.

From Tokyo Shinbun (7/5/2011):

SNIP (Japanese characters not displaying correctly)

Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission disclosed on July 4 that the survey done in late March on 1,000 children living near Fukushima..."

SNIP

So the Japanese government was secretly testing the children in Iitate-mura, as it scoffed at the suggestion by IAEA that the radiation level in the village was very high and evacuation should be considered. All back in late March when it could have made a difference.

According to Tokyo Brown Tabby who read the Japanese post and called up the NSC, the NSC says the data was uploaded in May to the NSC website. So far I haven't managed to locate it. The NSC also says they informed the parents. I hope so.

They tested the children in March. Wonder what their thyroid exposure readings are now?

At the link, the blogger includes the Japanese news article and his English translation below each paragraph. For some reason, the Japanese characters are not displaying correctly today but they have been alright in the past - don't know what the problem is.

Time to rethink the KI protocols. I wonder what was their plan and how closely it was followed.

Gonna need a lot of Levoxyl or Synthroid down the road

Yes - and fashionable scarves to cover any neck scars.
I was reading that there is a stigma against marrying those whose families come from Nagasaki - the Japanese are afraid offspring will have genetic deformities from the bomb. So too these children may be ostracized on the marriage market if they are seen as having been exposed to radiation - that neck scar could be a problem. In addition to physical illnesses, the parents are probably worried about their children’s futures socially as well.

You’re comparing Fukushima to Nagasaki?

Wow.

This is pretty much expected that they would have some irradiation in the thyroid. It doesn’t mean that evacuation was warranted.

It’s very easy to treat.

Once again, overblown fears.

Of course I am not comparing Fukushima to Nagasaki. I am wondering if the social stigma that the Japanese have attached to people whose families come from Nagaski, even after all these years, will also be attached to children who come from the Fukushima area. I was commenting on radioactive contamination and the social stigma attached to it.

Humm

What's the Japanese word for “Downwinder?”

Fully half of my wife's graduating class is dead - from various cancers. As a downwinder, this really strikes home.

And the FedGov said “not to worry”. Sound familiar?

Speaking of overblown fears, whatever happened to the Fukushima 50 (actually 200)? At first it seemed as though they only had hours to live. I wonder what happened to them. I’m willing to bet most, if not all, are still alive.

Yes, it does sound familiar. But I think you’re being polite because the gov and nuke apologists tend to say “Don’t worry, Stupid!”

So were these ‘downwinders’ in Nevada?

Nope, Utah.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downwinders

http://historytogo.utah.gov/utah_chapters/utah_today/nucleartestingandthedownwinders.html

and

Downwinders - A research and educational foundation established in 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Downwinders takes its name from the residents living in the prevailing wind pattern surrounding the Nevada Test Site, and who have been constantly exposed to radioactive fallout from America’s nuclear testing activities conducted there. Downwinders was founded with two primary goals: (1) To expose the plight of downwind residents whose fallout exposures have caused cancers, leukemia, and other illnesses, and to obtain justice for their injuries. (2) To fight for an immediate end to all nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site and elsewhere.

Not to be confused with the folks from Hansford, or other polution centers.

Of course their thyroid glands would show some exposure; it’s one of the most easily affected organs of the body, because the radioactive iodine is taken up so quickly, even at very low levels.

‘_______or Synthroid down the road.’

Better yet, Armour thyroid.
Except not the junk we (the U.S.) got recently after it was ‘reworked.’
If one is a long time user, you know what I’m speaking about.

Check thru Canada Pharmacy. They use an ‘armour’ product called ERFA - a desiccated product, maybe from Belgium.
Your doctor or NP writes a prescription for armour, then calls or faxes it to Canada Pharmacy, and they know what to do.

Had Graves at 30...54 now Levoxyl works best for me

My experience with organic not so hot but good luck if it works for you

Never use generics in hormone replacement

They tested the children in March. Wonder what their thyroid exposure readings are now?

Surely lower. Iodine disintegrates rapidly, so three months after the quake, it only can be found around the power plant. Four months after the quake, not even there, as you can see here.

In order to scare people, elements with a longer half-life are needed.

Every now and then short lived isotopes are detected in the water at the reactors - their presence seems to indicate recurrent criticality. For example, Tellurium-129 (half life of 70 minutes) and Tellurium-129m (half life 34 days) was detected in samples taken June 4th.
http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2011/06/fukushima-i-nuke-plant-radioactive_29.html
I have read this kind of report every now and then and it seems to indicate the molten mass of melted fuel can still reach, in a limited fashion, criticality so the presence of iodine, although not always tested for, is likely. These cores continue to release contaminates. So yes, the children may have been exposed to higher thyroid doses and *shudder* higher amounts of Cesium and Strontium in their bodies, as well as external exposure, now then they did back in March.
I was just reading about the Ibaraki prefecture that had its school children clean out the school pools. The dirt the children scooped from the bottom of the pool was collected for testing and it was discovered to have 17,020 Becquerels/Kg of cesium contamination. Apparently no testing was done for other isotopes (?). It’s really a mystery what the children’s exposure levels are by now - four months of this kind of decision making.

Oh, I thought that what the report said was that there was no indication of the easily to absorb and concentrate iodine-131 in most of the Fukushima’s children.
