At the link, the blogger includes the Japanese news article and his English translation below each paragraph. For some reason, the Japanese characters are not displaying correctly today but they have been alright in the past - don't know what the problem is.

Fully half of my wife's graduating class is dead - from various cancers. As a downwinder, this really strikes home.

Of course their thyroid glands would show some exposure; it’s one of the most easily affected organs of the body, because the radioactive iodine is taken up so quickly, even at very low levels.

Surely lower. Iodine disintegrates rapidly, so three months after the quake, it only can be found around the power plant. Four months after the quake, not even there, as you can see
here.
In order to scare people, elements with a longer half-life are needed.
