I was reading that there is a stigma against marrying those whose families come from Nagasaki - the Japanese are afraid offspring will have genetic deformities from the bomb. So too these children may be ostracized on the marriage market if they are seen as having been exposed to radiation - that neck scar could be a problem. In addition to physical illnesses, the parents are probably worried about their children’s futures socially as well.
