As part of his promised new focus on jobs, President Obama yesterday hosted a bipartisan jobs meeting. But he has yet to propose many pro-employment specifics -- and his overall economic plan remains unmistakably anti-job. Lloyd Blankfein, chief executive of Goldman Sachs, has attacked some investment banking products as socially useless and said that the controversy over bankers’ pay was both understandable and appropriate, in a speech to the Handelsblatt banking conference in Frankfurt. He did not comment on the "social" usefulness of his new townhouse with its 12 car garage. Blankfein said that multi-year bonuses should be outlawed and senior staff should receive large proportions of pay in stock, rather than cash. With the recent news of the supreme court decision of allowing the Chrysler bankruptcy to proceed, I am sad to say that the third and final branch of our government has fallen. I had hoped that Ruth Ginsberg would hear the case and America would get a favorable ruling on the Chrysler case. A favorable ruling would would have included giving the bond holders first crack at the money they were owed, and ruling that the TARP money could not be used for Car Company Bailouts and upholding the rule of law. It appears the rules are designed to make it very hard for banks to pay the money back, even though quite a number of them want to do so.
