August 26, 2004 Wounds Opened Anew as Vietnam ResurfacesBy TIMOTHY EGAN any of them are bent and broken, grayer and wider. Some carry shrapnel from a step too far, an ambush replayed over and over. All of them carry memories. And now as the debate over service 35 years ago in a war that will not entirely fade roils the presidential campaign, Vietnam veterans wonder if they are doomed to take the arguments that divided a nation to their graves. "It really upsets me, pitting one Vietnam veteran against another," said Frank Stephens, 55, of Granite Falls, Wash., who received...

Sen. John Kerry and his campaign have spent much of the last week accusing President Bush's campaign of illegally coordinating with a third-party group that has been running scathing ads attacking the Democratic presidential nominee's war record. Kerry last Thursday called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth a "front for the Bush campaign" that was doing the president's "dirty work." His campaign filed a complaint Friday with the Federal Election Commission spelling out the allegations. Today, with the resignation of Bush-Cheney national counsel Ben Ginsberg — who left the campaign after the disclosure he had also been working for Swift Boat...

I was asked by many FReepers to make this it's own thread, as they felt it wasn't getting enough exposure.I put this EXPOSE KERRY'S FRAUD SWIFT BOAT VETERANS FOR TRUTH sticker on my truck the other day. The next day on the way to work and back home I got lots of honks and 'thumbs up'! Lots of folks liked the message as we are seeing in the sales of "Unfit for Command".The sticker serves 2 purposes: 1 - Shows visible support for "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth" to passing motorists 2 - Gets the swiftvets.com website visible to the...

And Speaking of SnakesAugust 26, 2004 Liberals are the Hydra...one snake, multiple deranged heads. They look in the mirror and then lay all of their collective dysfunctions at the conservative door? Hey, if Maureen Dowd wants to waste 50 minutes on a shrink’s couch that’s fine, but transcribing her projective identification therapy into a weekly column is more than the normal world can take. It’s painful enough just to think of Dowd on a couch. In her latest column, Dowd accuses the “Bushes” of delegating to the “gutter”. From her castle in the air, she fantasizes that, ‘There are always third-party...

Months before "Swift Vets for Truth" was formally organized and during the democratic primary season, right before a debate in Detroit, I wrote a column about John Kerry and the Winter Soldier hearings that were held in Detroit in 1971. Researching Mr. Kerry's anti-war activities as he closed in on the nomination I assumed that Mr. Kerry's membership in, Vietnam Vets Against the War, his appearances at the Winter Soldier hearings, his march on Washington where he threw his "ribbons" over the Capitol Hill fence, and his career making Senate hearing appearance would come back to haunt his bid for...

I've had more people chastise me for defending George Bush. They say they should have the right to say what they want about the President and he should not be above criticism. Oh, I get it . . . we should have the freedom to besmirch the President of the United States, but how dare anyone malign John Kerry. John Kerry whines to the President, demanding that he make some war veterans stop talking about him; it's okay to impugn George Bush's name, but not his. Well liberals, you've just shown us your colors . . . yellow, yellow, yellow....

When my boyfriend and I heard that John Kerry was slated to be the guest on last night's Daily Show,we all but raced to the TiVo to set it on "record." (Not that we ever miss The Daily Show anyway, but this would be one worth keeping.) What a "get" for Jon Stewart, the court jester of the 2004 election! And finally Kerry would have the chance to step down from the campaign stump and show people who are desperate for a reason to vote for him what's he's really made of: his passion, his conviction, his much-vaunted (at least...

"I was a POW of the Vietnamese in Hanoi in 1971, and am aware that the testimony of John Kerry, the actions of Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden, and the radical left; all caused the Commies to conclude that if they hung on..they would win."... "His stories to the Senate committee were absolute lies..fabrications..perjury..fantasies, with NO substance. That dark shadow has defamed the entire Vietnam War veteran population, and gave "Aid and Comfort" to our enemies..the Vietnamese Communists." Dear Joe Scarborough: About John Kerry for President and the Swiftboat vets The major issue in the Swiftboat stories is, and always...

AgapePress) - If all you know, to paraphrase the late Will Rogers, is what you read and/or hear in the liberal media, you believe that President George W. Bush is the instigator of mean-spirited campaign ads. And if he isn't the instigator, he is the poster boy for mean ads at their worst. He is, therefore, lower than a mangy, three-legged, egg-sucking dog. Well, that is not all there is to it -- "it" being John Kerry's war record and the attack mounted against him by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. On February 8, 2004, candidate John Kerry lit...

E-mail to Candidate Kerry #14 From: James (Cooter) Thompson re: Swift Boats, Bad Choices Dear Senator Kerry: Last Saturday night, a bunch of us from here in Lagniappe went to the drag races over to Hadleyville. We went mostly to cheer on Lorna Gibbs who is Armen Yazoo's cousin and was matched up against Frank Gaston who owns Frank's Welding. It was Ford versus Chevy, too. Ol' Frank red-lighted twice and was way down the track in his one fair start. As you probably know, drag races are over mighty quick. There is a quantity of time spent waiting between...

A new four-legged angle actually a dog named "VC" has suddenly materialized surrounding Sen. John Kerry's swift boat service in Vietnam. In a 2004 presidential candidate questionnaire for Humane USA, Mr. Kerry was asked whether any pets have had an impact on his life. "I have always had pets in my life, and there are a few that I remember very fondly," Mr. Kerry replied. "When I was serving on a Swift Boat in Vietnam, my crewmates and I had a dog we called VC. "One day as our Swift Boat was heading up a river, a mine exploded hard...

When Bob Dole sought the presidency in 1980, 1988 and 1996, he and his supporters reminded voters that he was a decorated World War II veteran. Indeed, in 1996 Dole made his military service a central theme of his campaign against President Bill Clinton. The high level of emphasis by the Republican presidential nominee on his World War II record was a subtle dig at Clinton, who famously had gone out of his way to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. To his credit, Clinton and his supporters always accorded Dole an appropriate degree of respect for his service and...

The honorable thing to do is to stay out of this fight and acknowledge that you have no personal knowledge of the events the Swiftvets described. Senator McCain, I begin this missive with an embrazo, as we call it here in Texas, for your service to our country, as a warrior, as a prisoner of war and as a United States Senator. You have served far better and endured far more in the service of America than most men will ever do. For that, this old sergeant salutes you. That said, as a Vietnam ground combat veteran, I must take...

The SwiftVets are Kerry’s “I-did-not-have-sexual-relations-with-that-woman” moment. It's a disappointment when a smart guy, straining to find a unique insight in some vignette, misses the basic point by a mile. Such, however, is the case with the estimable David Brooks, writing in the New York Times on Tuesday about what he sees as Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry's decades-long metamorphosis from earnest Vietnam-era ardency to transparent opportunism. Brooks's op-ed falls prey to a disturbing media trend: the counterintuitive notion that because Senator John Kerry obscures simple truths about simple truths beneath an underbrush of purported "complexity" and "nuance," press coverage of...

On Nov. 10, 1944, Jack Cruice of Woodlyn was seriously injured following an explosion in Holland. After nine months in various hospitals, he eventually was returned home, but the Purple Heart eluded the Army veteran. But that’s not what matters today, to himself or for any man who wants to be president, Cruice said. He was referring to the controversy surrounding advertisements sponsored by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that question the validity of John Kerry’s medals and accuse him of betraying fellow veterans when he returned from the Vietnam War. For Cruice, picking a president means more than a...

President Bush didn't tell the full story on Monday when he denounced TV ads by such "527s" as the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. But not because he didn't agree to the Kerry campaign's demand that he repudiate the specific Swift Boat ads. Our gripe is that Mr. Bush assailed the very campaign-finance system that he helped create. "I don't think we ought to have 527s," Mr. Bush said, referring to the independent political fund-raising groups that have become such an important part of this election season. "And I hope my opponent joins me in saying, condemning those activities of...

Thank God the fall high school sports season is rapidly approaching. Bring on soccer, football, field hockey, volleyball, cross country and golf and maybe the purity and sanity of the athletes' efforts will take the place of the story that won't end - just what did John Kerry do in VietNam? The Massachusetts senator is being criticized hourly for the "plan" he put in place to use VietNam as a springboard to the presidency. It has become painfully obvious over the past decade and plus that the plan to the presidency does not run through VietNam, rather it runs through...
