Breaking with public opinion nationally, Massachusetts residents, by a slim majority, say they favor allowing gays to marry, a new Boston Globe/WBZ-TV poll shows.

In the survey, 50 percent supported legalizing gay and lesbian marriages, while 44 percent said they oppose it. Those figures are in sharp contrast to national polls in recent years. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey in 2000 found that 55 percent of Americans questioned opposed gay marriage, while 39 percent supported it. A Pew Center poll in 2001 showed only 35 percent of people favor same-sex marriage.

Rally for America on PBS and a hometown hero. Click to play On the Homefront: Spencer Michels reports from Sacramento on how the Iraq war is affecting veterans. The best we can do here is the audio. It would have been nice to see former Lt. John Kane representing our veterans and police officers so well, and Stephanie Brown with vets at the VA Hospital here. We found it a balanced report with our side getting the first and last word for a change. We're sure those members of our Armed Services and their families, who may have viewed it tonight, appreciate the brief scenes from our Rally for...

Hillary Clinton and other elected Democrats in the New York tri-state area have been conspicuously absent from recent rallies held to support U.S. armed forces fighting in Iraq, says a New York City talk show host who has attended and helped promote many of the events. "We have promoted dozens and dozens of rallies," WABC Radio's Curtis Sliwa told his colleague Steve Malzberg Sunday morning. "How come we don't see any being sponsored by elected Democratic officials? ... How come we never see...

More than two-thirds of the public approve of Tony Blair's handling of the war in Iraq and more than half back British involvement in military action, according to a new opinion poll. However, two-in-five believe there will be heavy civilian casualties in the battle for Baghdad. The poll, by YouGov, found the public was split on the question of whether the war would make the rest of the world more peaceful and stable, with some 44% saying it would not. More than two-in-three people thought Mr Blair's handling of the war itself was excellent (18%) or good (50%). Slightly more...

Poll: War Support Grows, Even Attack on Iran, Syria America the beautiful is fast becoming America the bellicose, a new poll suggests. As the nation's substantial backing of President Bush and the war against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq soars, it now appears that a sizeable number of the public would even support military moves against Iran or Syria. According to the anti-war, anti-Bush Los Angeles Times, their new poll shows a clear majority of Americans back the war in Iraq, and half those polled endorsed military action against Iran if it continues to develop nuclear weapons. The poll disclosed that: More...

Tonight's FReep of the peaceniks on the corner of Fresno's busiest intersection at Blackstone and Shaw Avenue was attended by at least twenty-two FReepers and patriots. This is a great turnout (even though it was not at all like last week's) because it had rained off and on all day and was threatening to start back up again the whole time we were out there. We didn't get rained on though, thank goodness! It was also unseasonably chilly for this part of the country tonight, a chilly forty-seven degrees. Among those FReepers and regulars who were able to be there...

Toronto's RALLY FOR AMERICA -- Why Concerned Canadians Should Attend...... April 4, 2003: Today, at noon, a non-profit coalition called Friends of America is holding a rally in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. The purpose is officially to "show that we love, respect & support our friends, neighbours, and allies" and unofficially (this part is my own spin) to tell the United States that we're not all as insensitive, ungrateful, and spineless as our leader, M. Chretien, and his Liberal government. To my fellow Canadians, I say, let's show the Americans that ordinary Canadians are actually behind them, and that...

Through a minefield, with Iraqi help Encounters may be signs of growing civilian support for U.S. By Dana Lewis NBC NEWS NAJAF, Iraq, April 2 — As units of the 101st Airborne moved into Najaf Tuesday, Iraqi civilians came forward on at least two occasions to point out minefields in their path. American commanders say that could be an indication that U.S. forces are beginning to win the trust of some Iraqis, a key goal of the U.S. and its allies in their fight to topple the government of Saddam Hussein.

BOUNCING AROUND the Internet is a photo of a huge banner that was carried in the recent "peace" demonstration in San Francisco. The banner says, "We support our troops when they shoot their officers." Now, the calm response to that banner is that "our troops," were they to shoot "their officers," would be violating the oath they take upon enlisting, which obligates them to obey "the orders of [superior] officers," which don't include shooting or otherwise committing acts of violence against those officers. And such acts, it probably doesn't have to be pointed out, aren't merely violations of the oath...

Sorry I haven't been back in over a month- busy times lately, especially the last few days! I am the president of the Tarleton State University College Republicans (TX) and I helped coordinate a Troop Support Rally for this afternoon. Just got back and it went well! Even had the mayor (ret. Col.) and University president come speak, along with a couple ROTC reps. Taps and a 21 gun salute were performed as well. Turnout ~100 students, faculty, alumni and staff of the University. Pics, you say? :) I've got the ugly mug on the last couple pages. http://www.tarleton.edu/~daskins/pictures/albums/supportrally/page_01.htm Warm...
