The House Republican crackdown has reached a new level of severity. House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz has stripped North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows of his subcommittee chairmanship, just days after he defied leadership on the House floor by voting against a party-line procedural motion. “Sometimes the coach needs to make a change on the field,” Chaffetz (R-Utah) told POLITICO Saturday. “He’s still a valuable contributor, and I really like Mark Meadows, he’s a good person. But I need to make a change.” Losing a subcommittee chairmanship midway through a congressional session is among the most serious punishments...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate voted Wednesday night to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from public workers after discovering a way to bypass the chamber's missing Democrats. All 14 Senate Democrats fled to Illinois nearly three weeks ago, preventing the chamber from having enough members present to consider Gov. Scott Walker's so-called "budget repair bill" - a proposal introduced to plug a $137 million budget shortfall. The Senate requires a quorum to take up any measures that spend money. But Republicans on Wednesday split from the legislation the proposal to curtail union rights, which spends...

The Knesset agreed Tuesday evening in a 34-16 vote to strip freshman MK Hanin Zoabi of three privileges. The move was a response to Zoabi's participation in a flotilla that attempted to dock in Gaza in defiance of Israel's naval blockade of Hamas. Zoabi has lost the following privileges: use of a diplomatic passport, government participation in legal fees, and enhanced freedoms regarding international travel. Following the vote, Zoabi and her fellow Balad party MK Jamal Zahalka nearly came to blows with Kadima MKs Yoel Hasson and Carmel Shama. Knesset workers intervened to subdue the argument.

A US-based human rights group criticized Jordan Monday for stripping the citizenship of nearly 3,000 Jordanians of Palestinian origin in recent years. Nearly half the kingdom's 6 million people are of Palestinian origin and Jordan fears that if Palestinians become the majority, it will disrupt the delicate demographic balance. Concerned about increasing numbers of Palestinians in the country, Jordan in 2004 began revoking citizenship from Palestinians who do not have the Israeli permits that are necessary to reside in the West Bank.
