The politician who once best exemplified the idea of a "maverick" independent has shifted so far to the right that he is now tied for the title of the Senate's most conservative member, according to National Journal's 2010 vote ratings. According to a comprehensive examination of 96 Senate votes taken in 2010, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., along with seven of his colleagues, voted most often on the conservative side. His 89.7 composite conservative score ties him with stalwarts like Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and gives him a more conservative score than Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. (snip)...

George W. Bush Secretly Visits Fort Hood Victims By Bill Sammon Published November 07, 2009 Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura secretly visited Fort Hood last night and spent "considerable time" consoling those who were wounded in Thursday's shooting spree, Fox News has learned. The Bushes entered and departed the sprawling military facility in secret, having told the base commander they did not want press coverage of their visit, a source told Fox News. The couple was described as "deeply concerned" about military families on Fort Hood after Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire on...

Joe Lieberman is once again endorsing John McCain over Barack Obama – this time on a critical national security issue. Lieberman and McCain have introduced a bill that would deny Miranda rights to terrorist suspects and block them from the U.S. civil court system. The bill could interfere with the Obama administration’s efforts to cut a deal with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham to develop a comprehensive system to deal with detainees—an effort that would include some role for federal courts. Graham, a military lawyer and currently serves a colonel in the U.S. Air Force reserves, has been negotiating with White...

A Senate staffer confirmed that Sen. John McCain no longer supports a bill he introduced to significantly tighten regulatory requirements for dietary supplements. McCain offered the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, S. 3002, in February. The Arizona Republican will now collaborate with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, on revised legislation that allegedly provides for transparency and safety within the supplement industry but without the intensive regulatory intervention proposed in S. 3002. No timeline is set for introduction of a new bill. Hatch thanks McCain for withdrawing his support of the original legislation in a March 4 letter. "I'm counting on...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Sen. John McCain says last week's shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas was an "act of terror." McCain said there were signs that the alleged shooter had shown "disturbing behavior" and that those signals should have been passed along to the proper authorities. The Arizona Republican made the comments Wednesday during a Veteran's Day speech at the University of Louisville as a guest of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

(Washington, D.C.) -- Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) predicted on Thursday that there will be a constitutional challenge to the provision in the health care bill under consideration in Congress that would require all Americans to buy health insurance. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the federal government has never before mandated that Americans purchase any good or service. When asked by CNSNews.com on Thursday where in the Constitution is Congress given the authority to mandate that people buy health insurance, McCain said, “That is an excellent question and I’m sure that if they pass health care legislation, I think there...

Years ago, Mark Twain said, "Buy land, they're not making it anymore." It's a wise admonition, unless you live in one of the many states that disregard private-property rights. In Connecticut, if a landowner won't sell you his land, then the government is happy to seize it in order to generate new taxable income for the government. Shockingly, four years ago this month the Supreme Court held that cities could take land from a private owner and transfer it to another private owner for economic development. Nine homeowners were forced out of their well-maintained homes in New London, Conn., because...

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Sen. John McCain says Americans are in the toughest times he can remember and that President Barack Obama hasn't brought the change in Washington that he promised. McCain spoke at a town hall Friday to a couple hundred people in a Mesa church, reiterating many of the same points he's made in recent similar events.

The shocking thing about the late-night comic’s “joke” about Willow Palin isn’t just that he told it, but that he would never have considered doing the same about the daughter of a Democrat. When I first read about David Letterman’s comments about Sarah Palin and her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, I twittered that his remarks were “disgusting and sexist.” That is still how I feel, and I thought his rebuttal was borderline insulting. After claiming to never have made a joke about raping a 14 year old, which he essentially had, he then invited Sarah to come on his show, which...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain urged President Barack Obama Thursday to classify photographs said to depict the abuse of terrorism suspects to ensure they do not become public. Obama is fighting release of the photos in the courts but has not declared them secret. "All he has to do today is use an executive order to declare these photos classified material," said McCain who lost the 2008 presidential election to Obama. "That's all he has to do," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.

h3>March 23, 2007 Romney Wins A South Carolina Straw Poll This proves he's still popular with the young 'uns. Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney won the SC Colleagiate Republican Organization's straw poll yesterday. Ironically, the SCCRO's convention this year was keynoted by State Sen. John Courson, a major backer of Sen. John McCain's. No word on whether -- or how much -- Romney's campaign paid to move the vote here. Mitt Romney 53% Rudy Giuliani 19% John McCain 15%
