This morning, the Islamic State’s semi-official news agency, Amaq, took credit for the Las Vegas massacre, which killed 58 and wounded another 515. The likely killer, identified by police as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, was not known to be a supporter of the Islamic State, or indeed a Muslim of any type. For now, the only evidence that the Islamic State was involved is its own assurance—first a press release announcing that a “soldier of the Islamic State” executed the concertgoers, and a follow-up for the baffled, explaining that he converted to Islam months ago. The FBI has...

Stephen Paddock has been identified as the gunman who opened fire on concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday, leaving at least 58 people dead and an estimated 515 wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, police said. The shooter, a 64-year-old from Mesquite, Nevada, was firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel down at the festival, which was located in a fairgrounds area on Las Vegas Boulevard, hitting several concertgoers. Officers responded to the hotel room and engaged the suspect, police said. They do not believe...

Massachusetts U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton says he will not participate in a moment of silence on the House floor after 50 people were killed in Las Vegas and more than 400 others were sent to area hospitals in the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The Democratic congressman, along with his Bay State colleague Katherine Clark, also did not participate in a moment of silence after a mass shooting in Orlando claimed the lives of 49 people in June 2016. The two joined other Democratic representatives to walk out on the moment of silence in a protest over a lack...

Opinion is divided this morning on Twitter among people who, unlike me, know more than the most basic basics about firearms. It’s not a matter of mere curiosity; as you (should) know, fully automatic weapons have been illegal in the U.S. for decades, which is why even mass shooters hellbent on murder unto death never use them. If Stephen Paddock used a machine gun, how on earth did he get it?

A top legal executive at CBS, Hayley Geftman-Gold, said she “is not even sympathetic” for the victims of the shooting at a country music festival at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Sunday night. “If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing,” wrote Geftman-Gold on Facebook, perhaps referring to Sandy Hook on Facebook. “I’m actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters.”

The father of Las Vegas madman Stephen Paddock was a “psychopath” himself — a bank robber who escaped federal prison in the late 1960s and landed on the FBI’s most-wanted list, according to reports. Paddock’s dad was serial felon Benjamin Haskins Paddock, according to the Daily Mail and a tweet from NBC. Benjamin Paddock had been locked up in 1960 for robbing an Arizona bank, escaped in 1968 and spent nearly three years on the run before the FBI caught up to him in Las Vegas in 1971, at which point he tried to run down an agent with his...

The suspected gunman behind the Las Vegas massacre made several large gambling transactions in recent weeks, according to law enforcement officials. The transactions in Las Vegas by Stephen Paddock were in the tens of thousands, the officials said. It was not immediately clear if those transactions were losses or wins. Paddock's brothers were stunned to learn Monday that their sibling was the suspected perpetrator of the largest mass shooting in modern American history. Eric Paddock of Orlando, Florida, said he had "no idea" why his 64-year-old brother committed the shooting. “Mars just fell into the earth,” he told NBC News....

Not exactly cut in stone, but apparently ISIS says the shooter converted to Islam months ago. Per WMAL in Wash. DC.

The Route 91 Harvest festival is a gun-free zone. That explains why no one in the crowd of country music fans was shooting back at the mass killer.

A public records search of Clark County Court cases revealed that Paddock filed a lawsuit against the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas hotel and resort. Tecords show he was suing for “Negligence – Premises Liability.” According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Paddock sued the casino after he fell. Paddock claimed he “slipped and fell on an obstruction on the floor” and was injured because of the “dangerous condition.” According to the records, the lawsuit was filed in September 2012. It was dismissed with prejudice on October 3, 2014. The two sides reached a settlement paid through arbitration.

More than 20 people were killed and 100 injured in a horrific shooting near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Sunday night, police said. The "nonstop gunfire," according to one witness, sent bystanders outside the resort on the Vegas strip ducking for cover and fleeing for their lives. Tourists hid in their hotel rooms and flights headed into the McCarran International Airport airport were held elsewhere. Bystanders sprang into action, caring for the wounded and at least one described someone dying in their arms. Videos filmed by onlookers gave a window into the chaos that ensued, with...
