Well, I'm just full of questions this week! This one should be pretty easy: Are there any brands of automotive aftermarket power steering pumps that FReepers have had good luck with? "Good luck" in this case means proper operation and no leaks for over 50k miles, preferably over 100k miles. Slight difficulties in installation, I can overcome, as I do most minor repair work on my cars myself. And I've studied vids and forums when it comes to instructions on bleeding the steering system hydraulics, things to watch out for during installation, and so on.

A Maryland mom faces up to 55 years behind bars for killing her 3-year-old daughter in a crash while driving at almost 100 mph – in what prosecutors described as “steering a missile down the road in the middle of rush hour.” DanShell Evon, 38, was recorded driving her three kids at 98 mph — well over twice the speed limit — seconds before her 2015 Kia Optima slammed into a Ford F-150 truck in Silver Spring in May 2022, WJLA reported. The mom and her two 13-year-old children suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the horrific wreck, as did two adults...
  • Amazon pulls listings for 'steering wheel weights' that allow Tesla drivers to trick the vehicle into thinking their hands are on the wheel while on self-driving mode

Amazon has pulled listings for 'steering wheel weights' that allow Tesla drivers to trick the vehicle into thinking their hands are on the wheel in self-driving mode. The Seattle-based firm was joined by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba in purging the products from their stores after they were linked to accidents. The gadgets clamp onto the steering wheel and trick the car's sensors into thinking that they are a pair of driver's hands. Autopilot mode in a Tesla still requires a driver to be holding the wheel for safety reasons. In March, a Tesla struck a teenager without slowing as he...

Almost two weeks after NLPC first requested that General Motors recall vehicles with defective power steering components , the company has agreed to the recall and finally remove the dangerous vehicles from the roads. Over 1.3 million Saturn Ions and related vehicles are included in the recall, bringing the total amount of GM vehicles recalled over the past month or so to over 6 million. The total cost to GM for the recalls will be in the billions of dollars with the latest recall probably accounting for over $1.5 billion on its own. The costs to GM's reputation are...
  • Congress Must Ask Barra Why GM Hasn’t Recalled Saturn Ions with Power Steering Loss

On Friday, General Motors expanded its recall of vehicles with an ignition switch defect, but Saturn Ions with a dangerous steering loss problem remain unrecalled, even though Chevy Cobalts and other models with the exact same defect were previously recalled. The two Congressional Committees holding hearings this week must directly ask GM CEO Mary Barra why these dangerous vehicles remain on the road. It has now been almost two weeks since we requested that Barra immediately order a recall of Saturn Ions (MY 2004 to 2007) with defective electric power steering systems. GM had previously recalled Chevy Cobalts and Pontiac...

Scientists a step closer to steering hurricanes By Tim Shipman in Washington Last Updated: 1:07am BST 21/10/2007 Scientists have made a breakthrough in man's desire to control the forces of nature – unveiling plans to weaken hurricanes and steer them off course, to prevent tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina. How to halt a hurricane: Click to enlarge The damage done to New Orleans in 2005 has spurred two rival teams of climate experts, in America and Israel, to redouble their efforts to enable people to play God with the weather. Under one scheme, aircraft would drop soot into the near-freezing...
