Thursday Afternoon Power Steering Pump Question
Me | 7/25/2024 | Paul R.

Posted on 07/25/2024 1:10:01 PM PDT by Paul R.

Well, I'm just full of questions this week! This one should be pretty easy: Are there any brands of automotive aftermarket power steering pumps that FReepers have had good luck with?

"Good luck" in this case means proper operation and no leaks for over 50k miles, preferably over 100k miles. Slight difficulties in installation, I can overcome, as I do most minor repair work on my cars myself. And I've studied vids and forums when it comes to instructions on bleeding the steering system hydraulics, things to watch out for during installation, and so on.

Presently I'm looking at a Cardone pump, as 2 different well established sellers offer it with a limited lifetime warranty.

I'll be "out" until this evening, back later to check replies.

Thanks to all, in advance!

Oh, BTW, need to keep parts cost under $200 if at all possible. We are just dying here, financially. Insurance, food, geez, most everything essential is way up since Bite Me and Cackles took office. :-(

I usually go to Rockauto.com and see what is the most popular/highest rated part.
Many times the parts they sell are from the OEM supplier.

You should mention make / model / year of vehicle. That affects availability and selection.

I admit I haven’t thought much about it.

What symptoms cause you to seek a replacement? Do you have metal flakes in your fluid, a leak or both?

Cardone is junk. I refuse to sell my customers anything Cardone or Dorman.

What is the Year make and model?

Rockauto is what I used and continue to use even though I own a shop. Solid parts

Ha! I decided to pop back in for a few minutes. Need to get my body temperature down a bit anyway - it’s hot “out”!

Anyway, it’s fluid leakage, mostly from the bottom half of the pump. Possibly the shaft seal, too. Hard to see, there, in this car. (Subie Outback with almost 270k miles on it. Pump is original, I think.

I replaced a seal on the top connector, maybe 2 years ago, and that’s holding up ok. No metal flakes observed. Definite groaning sounds at low (winter) temperatures. Steering otherwise sounds and feels fine.

2009 Outback 2.5i

But, I’m worried less about availability and selection (have found quite a few options) at this point, than user’s experience in general. If I narrow it down to this particular car model and year, “experience data” is very limited. I am in effect falling back on “Does this company have a good record when it comes to power steering pumps?”.

I’ve had poor luck with Cardone rebuilt parts. Another vote for Rockauto.

Looks like I bought a WMPHE

I bought it 3 months ago but haven’t had the mechanic out it on yet because he’s never available - still it’s hanging in there

Would it be worth it to have the existing one rebuilt?

Yes, but you also eliminate some big players who are not applicable (e.g. AC/Delco).
