The right of the people to keep and bear arms isn't just about our individual ability to act in self-defense or defense of others. As the Founders knew, the body of the people capable of bearing arms (otherwise known as the unorganized militia) is necessary to the security of a free state as well. Second Amendment attorneys Chuck Michel and Kostas Moros have done an excellent job of laying out the arguments of the Founding Generation in their recent law review article entitled Restrictions "Our Ancestors Would Never Have Accepted": The Historical Case Against Assault Weapon Bans, but the government...

MONROE, Wash. -- Special federal agents are investigating a local gun range suspected of serving as a militia training camp, according to court documents. Owner Jim Faire says he can't afford to run a background check on every visitor because his outdoor gun range is a nonprofit business. As a result, he said, county officials and the FBI have begun cracking down on the range after a convicted felon was caught with guns and drugs there. With thousands of shells littered across the ground, the gun range is now closed. Neighbors are glad to have the quiet, but they never...

SHOOTING TAKES HIT: Public shooting opportunities in national forests are disappearing, and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter proposes to do something about it. Ritter says several previously isolated forest shooting ranges have been shut down because of homebuilding nearby, and shooters have been forced into dispersed shooting activities. Now the Forest Service is considering closing down some dispersed-shooting areas because of development and increased non-shooting recreational use. Ritter says he would make recreational shooting improvements a priority if he is elected governor. He wants Colorado to take the lead in establishing more shooting ranges, beginning with a pilot program he...

AWENDAW S.C. — Gunshot holes have been found in everything from picnic tables and signs to pine trees, and foresters warn a free public shooting range in the Francis Marion National Forest will be closed unless the vandalism stops. “The range gets horrible abuse. It’s not a public dumping ground,” said Anne Kiser of the U.S. Forest Service. “We’re trying to demonstrate to people that this is a facility for the public, but they’re responsible whether it stays open or we shut it down.” Workers are making repairs at the Twin Ponds rifle range. They are also putting a concrete...

OUT OF RANGE Shooting Ranges have increasingly come under fire in recent years, prompting NRA to take action. If there were no paved roads, what would you do with your car? And if there were no places to shoot, how would you exercise your Second Amendment Rights? The right to keep and bear arms may have nothing to do with target shooting, hunting, or the shooting sports. But when a shooting range is shut down, shooters lose a place to learn safety, gun owners lose a place to practice, and in many cases, our firearm freedoms lose constituents, as one...
