Faced with the intense difficulty of what to say about Ariel Sharon, the former Israeli prime minister who died early Saturday after eight years in a coma, President Barack Obama didn’t say much. The statement from Obama — who never met Sharon, and wasn’t yet even running for president when he fell into a coma, mentioned nothing about the Israeli leader’s own complicated history with war and peace, remarking only in sending “our deepest condolences” that he was a leader who “dedicated his life to the State of Israel.”

Ariel Sharon — the military hero and prime minister who was among the most controversial figures in the history of Israel — has died, eight years after the massive stroke that left him comatose. The hospital that had been treating Ariel Sharon says the former Israeli Prime Minister has died. Hospital spokesman Dr. Shlomo Noy said Saturday: "The Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer announces with sorrow the death of Mr. Ariel Sharon who passed about an hour ago." He said that during the years Sharon had been treated his condition was defined as "minimal consciousness" and he had had "ups and downs."
