A San Francisco transplant surgeon was criminally charged today with allegedly attempting to hasten the death last year of a 26-year-old disabled man on life support in order to harvest his organs more quickly. The charges are the first in the nation against a physician for his role in a transplant and are sure to raise further uneasiness about a somewhat controversial practice in which organs are retrieved before a patient is brain-dead. The San Luis Obispo County district attorney's office accused Dr. Hootan Roozrokh, 33, of dependent adult abuse, administering a harmful substance and prescribing an unlawful controlled substance...

S. F. neighborhood once known as a haven for drifters is overrun by disenfranchised homeless youths SAN FRANCISCO -- From his second-floor apartment at the counterculture crossing of Haight and Ashbury streets, Arthur Evans watches a new generation of wayward youth invade his free-spirited neighborhood. The former flower child was among the legions of idealistic wanderers who migrated here during the Vietnam War to "tune in, turn on and drop out." But Evans, who has lived at the same address for 34 years, says he has never seen anything like this crowd, who use his flower bed as a bathroom...

Gunfire on Market Street once again crackled in the afternoon air Monday, injuring one man and forcing the temporary closure of a section of the street popular with tourists. The victim, described as a black man in his late 20s, was shot near the intersection of Turk, Mason and Market streets just before 2 p.m. and made his way down Market Street to Fifth Street, where people came to his aid before paramedics arrived, according to San Francisco police spokesman Steve Mannina. The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mannina said. No arrests have been...

Because of water damage from an unusual fire, the Warming Hut at San Francisco’s Crissy Field will not reopen until late September or early October, officials said. The former Army shed, which operates as a “green” cafe and bookstore, became infested with a “microbial growth” after firefighters drenched it on Jan. 25, said Rich Weideman, spokesman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Removal of that growth, as well as a planned remodel of the kitchen, has added to the length of the repair process. The shed caught fire after an electric car belonging to the nonprofit Golden Gate National...

SHOTS RANG OUT. Animals fell. Hunters sidled forward to inspect their kill. Not what you'd expect among the clipped grass and picnic tables of Golden Gate Park. But it happened when worried animal experts called in state hunters to dispatch two dog-nipping coyotes. Right here in animal-loving, gun-hating San Francisco. It turns out that the city is filled with wildlife -- and we human roommates are learning to adjust. It's amazing -- and slightly dangerous -- that so many critters end up living in this concrete-and-stoplight city. As animal-world habitat is squeezed, wild creatures have gone exploring, marching into areas...

The Rocklin Historical Society is restoring a 124 year old church on Front Street in downtown Rocklin. When RHS completes the restoration in September 2007, the church will be primarily a non-denominational wedding chapel. Gold Rush era Bishop Joseph Alemany of the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese dedicated the church as Saint Mary’s of the Assumption in 1883. The Catholics abandoned the building in 1983 because it was too small and it was fraying with age. In November 2006, Gerry Lyons and Robb McLean of Wave Broadband were in the church interviewing Gene Johnson, the restoration’s project manager. While Johnson talked...

Summer Of Love Put Us All On A Bad Cultural Trip By DICK FEAGLERForty years ago, my editors put me on a plane and shipped me off to San Francisco to live with the hippies. I always had great out-of-town luck. So, on the ride, I met a nice, middle-class couple who were flying out to meet their son. He was a drummer for a band called Big Brother and the Holding Company. He met his parents at the airport. ``You want to know the scene?'' he said. ``Come with me tonight. We got a gig at the Fillmore.'' That's...

THAT'S A BIG number, that 86 percent in our headline. It represents the percentage of cases from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that were reversed or vacated by the Supreme Court in the term just ended. The actual number of slapdowns was 18, out of 21 cases that reached the high court from the San Francisco-based appellate court. Those numbers led all the cases heard by the Supreme Court, outpacing those from all of the other 12 appellate circuits. No surprise here. We're been tracking this abysmal record for years, and these results are nothing out of the...

Citing environmental concerns, Mayor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order prohibiting city departments from buying bottled water. In a decision announced Thursday, Newsom said the ban will go into effect July 1 and extend to all city and county water coolers by December 1. Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the San Francisco public utilities commission, said Newsom's decision will save tax payer money and combat global warming.

A Lutheran congregation in San Francisco will ordain an openly gay partnered minister Saturday as part of a drive to equalize LGBTs within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Dawn Roginski's ordination at St. Francis Lutheran Church directly challenges the denomination's policy of requiring lifelong celibacy of its gay and lesbian clergy while imposing no such restrictions on its heterosexuals. The ceremony will mark the third such challenge to the policy in eight months. The ceremonies, which run outside the usual guidelines of Lutheran ordinations to certify the credentials of openly identified sexual minorities, are supported by the Lutheran...

You’ll be shocked, shocked to find out who’s behind this: Veterans for Peace, Global Exchange and Code Pink. But don’t you dare question their patriotism. Questioning their sanity is fair game, though. Evidence of west coast anti-military crazy goes back a few years. The annual aerial show by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels — a San Francisco tradition dating back to 1981 that pumps millions into the local economy — is running into opposition from three local peace advocacy groups that are calling for a permanent halt to the popular Fleet Week flyover. CodePink, Global Exchange and Veterans for Peace,...

(CBS 5) SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will now face serious opposition as he seeks re-election in November. Former city supervisor Tony Hall, considered more conservative than Newsom, told CBS 5 Thursday that he is jumping into the mayoral race. Hall is a former director of Treasure Island, who was appointed to that job by Newsom. But after the men had a falling out, Hall became a frequent critic of Newsom. A spokesperson for Newsom's campaign said, "Mayor Newsom welcomes all candidates to the debate." Newsom has raised about $1.3 million in campaign contributions so far. Thirteen...

SAN FRANCISCO -- FBI agents carrying out a criminal investigation searched the City Hall office of Supervisor Ed Jew this afternoon, authorities said. Agents, armed with search warrants, also targeted four other unspecified locations tied to the rookie lawmaker, the sources said. "The FBI executed sealed search warrants involving potentially federal criminal allegations,'' said FBI spokeswoman Patty Hansen. Jew, who owns a flower shop in Chinatown, represents the city's Sunset district and was elected last fall. He has served as supervisor just over five months. Hansen declined comment on what agents were looking for and the other locations that were...

SAN FRANCISCO City is sued for failing to report noncitizens arrested for drugs Activist contends police are breaking California law Leslie Fulbright, Chronicle Staff Writer Friday, May 11, 2007 A San Francisco illegal immigration opponent has sued the city's police chief and police commissioners for failing to comply with a state law that requires officers to tell federal authorities about all suspected noncitizens who are arrested on drug charges. Charles Fonseca, a 70-year-old Portola district resident who came to the United States from Nicaragua at the age of 9 and filed the lawsuit May 4, said he opposes amnesty for...

(CBS 5 / AP / BCN) SAN FRANCISCO A San Francisco woman who allegedly walked away from her baby boy after giving birth to him on a street corner was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and neglect, police said. Nadine Matthews gave birth on the sidewalk Sunday night, then walked away pretending that it never happened, said SFPD Capt. Al Casciato. A security guard called 911 after seeing the woman give birth on 5th and Stevenson streets. When an ambulance arrived, a 5-pound, 12-ounce baby boy was found alive and kicking, but his mother was nowhere to be found,...

The College Republicans say they simply copied the...

HELSINKI (Reuters) - A Finnish member of parliament is aiming for re-election by campaigning with a translation of his Web site into Klingon, used in the TV series Star Trek. "Some have thought it is blasphemy to mix politics and Klingon," said Jyrki Kasvi, an ardent Trekkie. "Others say it is good if politicians can laugh at themselves." He said his politics posed some translation difficulties, since Klingon does not have words for matters such as tolerance, or for many colours, including green -- the party under whose banner he is running in the national elections on March 18. Non-warriors...

San Francisco -- surprise! -- has surpassed Los Angeles as the capital of the gay adult entertainment industry. To the list of accolades that make San Francisco the gayest city around, you can add this: world headquarters of the gay adult entertainment industry. Over the past few years the core of that industry has shifted from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and nearly every leading studio that makes gay adult content now is centered in the city, mainly in the South of Market and lower Potrero Hill neighborhoods. The content of the industry -- that is, the movies themselves --...
