The UK's last military Sea Kings touch down for the last time after delivery into storage. (photo: Royal Navy) On September 26 three Westland Sea Kings from the Royal Navy undertook a ceremonial last flight after 49 years of service. The trio of 849 Naval Air Squadron Sea King ASaC7 helicopters took off from their home base at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall for a flight that took them for a fuel stop at RNAS Yeovilton and a flypast of the Yeovil factory where they were made, before landing at the HMS Sultan base in Gosport to await...

A Royal Navy helicopter dubbed the "Land Rover of the skies" will make its final flypast later. The Sea King Mk4 has been flying for 36 years with the Commando Helicopter Force, based at RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset. Five of the aircraft will fly from the base, visiting Portsmouth, Poole, Plymouth, Okehampton, Bristol and Glastonbury. The fleet will be decommissioned at the end of the month. On Sunday a 'Junglie' Sea King landed for the final time on the flight deck of HMS Bulwark, which is currently at sea off the Devon coast. Captain James Parkin said: "The 'Junglie' Sea King...

After more than 25 years of trying to replace the country’s fleet of Sea King maritime helicopters, the Canadian Forces have watched another deadline come and go. Sikorsky International Operations Inc. was supposed to deliver the first of 28 state-of-the-art CH-148 Cyclones in June, after the Harper government agreed in late 2008 to extend the deadline on the $5.7-billion contract by 43 months. In the latest in a string of missteps in military procurements, Sikorsky is pushing back on the delivery, with still no official date being offered for the completion of the contract. “Sikorsky has yet to start delivering...

During recent operations, deployed Sea King crews have described the radar as 'unique' and both British and coalition partners have stated that it is a 'key contributory factor' in protecting civilians and military personnel from the insurgents, providing the essential...

PICTURES: Royal Navy offered AEW-configured AW101 By Craig Hoyle AgustaWestland and Thales have stepped up their efforts to promote a development of the AW101 to replace the UK Royal Navy's venerable Sea King 7 airborne surveillance and control (ASaC) aircraft. As the incumbent suppliers of the RN's organic airborne early warning capability, the companies have joined forces to offer the AW101 Merlin equipped with Thales's Searchwater 2000 radar and Cerberus mission system. The RN's current 11 Sea King ASaC helicopters are due to be retired from use in 2016, and a new type is needed to operate from its two...

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The last two H-3 Sea King helicopters made their last operational flight Jan. 27, taking to the air before making way for their replacement, the MH-60S Knighthawk. Military personnel and civilians gathered in hangar SP-35 aboard Naval Station Norfolk, home of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 2, the Fleet Angels, as their Commanding Officer, Cmdr. H. Kris Croeber, addressed the crowd. “Whatever the mission they were tasked with, the H-3 found a way to get it done.” said Croeber. “There is only one King.” Throughout its 45-year history, the H-3 has been involved in many missions,...

Canada's Sea King helicopters are hovering dinosaurs. Actually, they do not hover much: The 1950s-era aircraft require 30 hours of maintenance for every one hour of flight. Earlier this year, a Sea King crashed on the deck of a Canadian warship, the latest in a long series of snafus. Last week, Canada's maritime helicopter program was again at the centre of a government controversy. According to documents revealed last week by the National Post, the tendering process for the $2.5-billion purchase of 28 new helicopters seems to have been manipulated to favour a French manufacturer. The original technical specifications for...

The Sea King helicopters are over 40 years old and were being sent to the Gulf area near the war -- not the war -- so that Canadian politicians could claim points. But the helicopter crashed right outside the harbour.

'Goodbye papa, please pray for me...' CREDIT: Halifax Chronicle-Herald A Sea King helicopter sits in a bog in April 2000, after a transmission leak forced it to make an emergency landing on a small island off Nova Scotia. None of the five-member crew was injured. It may not go to the top of the charts in Defence Minister John McCallum's household,, but the latest underground hit in the Canadian Forces is a satirical ditty detailing the government's failure to replace the aging Sea King helicopter. Sung to the tune of the Terry Jacks hit Seasons in the Sun, the song...
