Save Market Supermakets' labor unions have approved a new contract with the Modesto grocery chain that includes wage and benefit concessions, the union announced today. The announcement means Save Mart is the first of the three unionized grocers in Northern California to secure labor cost savings from the United Food and Commercial Workers. Raley's and Safeway Inc. are still struggling through negotiations that began last October. UFCW Local 5 in San Jose was the last of the three locals to approve the contract.
