Syracuse University’s announcement that it has taken the unusual step of hiring a pagan chaplain reflects a welcome open-mindedness to diversity and religious pluralism. The college’s roots are in Methodism. But the appointment of Mary Hudson as the 11th chaplain at Hendricks Chapel shows the broadening of religious expression in America — and one hopes, religious tolerance — in the 80 years since the chapel opened its doors.
