Beto O’Rourke saw firsthand what it's like to be just another presidential candidate during a sleepy town hall event Sunday afternoon as the enthusiasm and star power he sought to generate hit ground truth in Iowa. O'Rourke, 46, a former Texas congressman, started 30 minutes late, and the University of Iowa student union ballroom remained less than half filled as the candidate gave his pitch to fewer than 120 students, families, and retirees before taking questions. Many of those were not committed to O'Rourke. A number of attendees remarked to the Washington Examiner that O’Rourke’s crowd was smaller than they...

Guess elephants have some serious short-term memory issues! Everyone knows singer Jackson Browne is a serious liberal, everyone except, apparently, John McCain. Now Browne is fighting mad and has filed suit against McCain and his party, alleging they falsely suggested he was on their side. Browne claims the GOP used his epic hit "Running on Empty" in an ad for McCain without his permission, adding that the ad mocks Barack Obama, which Browne ain't none too happy about. The suit wants the ad to stop running -- STAT -- and is seeking damages. Browne's lawyer Lawrence Iser says this ain't...

Sen. Hillary Clinton went on the counterattack today, one day after a stinging defeat in the Iowa caucuses to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. She said New Hampshire voters need to take a hard look at Obama, suggesting that they shouldn't just buy into his message of "hope" without analyzing his policies. Clinton said she wasn't suggesting anything in particular about Obama, but simply "drawing contrasts." "I'm running on my record. … I'm running on my plans," Clinton told reporters. "I think everybody needs to be vetted and tested. That's the way elections are supposed to operate. The last thing the...

Republican opponents of the bill argued that it conflicts directly with Proposition 22, an initiative voters passed in 2000 that declares: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." They told Leno to take his measure to the voters. "The intent of Proposition 22 is very, very clear and very, very understandable," said Assemblyman Ray Haynes (R-Murrieta). "The people knew exactly what they were doing when they voted for it." In comments that some Democrats said they found offensive, some Republicans said gay activists were trying to subvert the institution of marriage. "We need...

Feb. 28 issue - Dan Glickman isn't exactly the Hollywood type. More comfortable in pinstripes than Prada, he's a former Clinton Agriculture secretary, Kansas congressman and president of the Witchita school board—and nothing like the flashy, debonair Jack Valenti, the legendary head of the Motion Picture Association of America. After 38 years at the MPAA, Valenti has become a celebrity in his own right, landing his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But as Glickman heads toward his first Academy Awards since taking over for Valenti as the industry's chief lobbyist, he's the one schmoozing Hollywood directors and...

running clintons... by Mia T, 2.16.03 WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Ex-Clinton political aide Bob Weiner is slamming the D.C. downtown Renaissance Hotel's new presidential photo sports bar as a ''deification of Bush, anti-Clinton, and thereby partisan.'' ...Weiner said, ''I saw an entrance corridor of four dramatic George W. Bush photos, another Bush photo on a wall, and one Clinton photo -- buried in a corner inside the actual bar, of him playing pool. To me, and to several hotel employees with whom I spoke, the Bush photos were disproportionate considering that Clinton is our most recent and...
