It wasn’t always this way. Not so long ago, the conventional thinking was that folks who were kind to others, received kindness to themselves in return. Parents throughout the Western world taught their kids the simple and comforting belief that people all over the world were the same. “Treat others the way you want to be treated yourself,” was thought to be a universal truism. The concept was based on the notion that everyone reacts equally to kindness. Even now, many “progressives,” still preach that doctrine.
