<p>President Bush's immigration initiative has angered conservative Republicans so much that some are refusing to donate to his re-election campaign, according to a Bush fund-raiser in Georgia.</p> <p>Phil Kent, a member of the host committee for a Bush fund-raiser in Atlanta yesterday, said he was told by several would-be donors that they would not attend the $2,000-per-person event because of the president's announcement last week on immigration reform.</p>

<p>President Bush bolstered his "compassionate" credentials among moderates with his proposal to offer millions of undocumented workers guest worker cards. But even as supporters were cheering the president's announcement from the East Room on Wednesday, angry calls were already pouring into the office of US Representative Elton Gallegly, a conservative Republican from the heart of Bush country.</p>

Now, however, the President has come up with a policy decision that may cause enough of his coalition to vote for a third party or to stay at home. I believe his re-election is endangered if the race turns out to be close.Every single e-mail I got focused on the national security aspect of this question. A few also mentioned the abandonment of the rule of law. Whatever his motivation, he is making the oldest mistake in politics. He is abandoning his base. The greatest concern of his base is over national security.
